Highlights from the interview
Something that sets HSC apart is how much the teachers care about your individual path. They take the time to understand your interests and strengths and go out of their way to find opportunities that align with your goals. For me, that meant research opportunities and enrichment contests in math and science. For others, it might mean publishing creative writing or exploring a new field. It’s never a one-size-fits-all approach, which is important since every student is unique.
Looking back, what I appreciated most about HSC was the range of opportunities to challenge myself academically. It wasn’t just about harder classes, though AP courses did push me. Hillfield fostered a culture of curiosity and growth. I participated in math contests, science enrichment programs, and other experiences that stretched me beyond the standard curriculum. At HSC, I was encouraged to ask questions, think independently, and explore topics in depth rather than just memorizing for a test.
When I started university, I realized how well HSC had prepared me. I had a strong academic foundation, but more importantly, I had developed critical thinking skills, study habits, and confidence that many of my classmates were still figuring out. This gave me a huge head start during what was already a big transition.
The key differentiating factor of HSC is the depth of relationships and the personalized approach to learning. You’re not just a student number. Some of my teachers have known me since kindergarten, and I’m still in touch with a few today. That continuity in learning creates a unique environment of support and understanding.
What connects students at HSC is a strong sense of community and support. No matter your passion—sciences, arts, athletics, or something else—there’s always a space for you. Peers and teachers genuinely want to see you succeed. It’s not competitive or exclusive, but a place where people lift each other up. Everyone pursues their own path, but no one does it alone.
What might surprise families is how many opportunities exist outside the classroom, and how far they can take you. It’s one thing to be in a school club, but another to compete at the world’s largest Model UN in New York, perform at a music festival in New Orleans, or travel to Iceland for experiential learning. The scale and diversity of these experiences are unique at Hillfield. They help build confidence, broaden your worldview, and shape who you are beyond academics. These are the moments that stay with you long after graduation.
My experience at HSC has had a lasting impact on who I am today, especially in how I approach problems and think critically. The biggest takeaway wasn’t just knowledge, but the ability to analyze situations from multiple perspectives. These skills were developed consistently over the years through academics, enrichment, and the way teachers encouraged independent thinking. At university, those transferable skills set me apart, making it easier to adapt and excel both in class and in co-curricular opportunities.
When I was younger, I saw HSC as simply the place where I went to school. Over time, I came to understand the depth and intention behind the experience. Teachers adapted to my interests and cared about helping me grow, not just perform. Looking back, I now see HSC as more than a school—it was a community that shaped who I am. The relationships, mindset, and skills I gained have stayed with me long after graduation.
If HSC were a person, I believe it would be supportive, curious, and insightful. Supportive like a friend who wants to see you grow, curious in always seeking challenges and thoughtful questions, and insightful in recognizing your potential even before you do. HSC guides you toward opportunities that match your strengths and passions in a thoughtful and personalized way.
