Lauren Ferguson, an alumna of Hillfield Strathallan College, shared her perspective on how HSC gave her confidence, leadership experience, close teacher relationships, and wide opportunities, all reinforced by a strong, community-building culture exemplified by E-Week.
Highlights from the interview
- HSC has given me so many critical skills that I have carried with me into university, where I felt the confidence to embark on executive club roles and to help make a difference in my university community.
In Grade 12, I had the honour of serving as a lead executive ambassador for the admissions team. In that role, I learned how to lead and organize an executive team and to help contribute more meaningfully to campus events. I'm very grateful for that role because it taught me how to be organized, detail-oriented, collaborative, and team-focused.
What I appreciated most about HSC was the breadth of opportunity both inside and outside the classroom. Whether in the arts, athletics, academics, or service work, there is a space for every student to thrive and find a role they can embrace.
The small class sizes gave you the opportunity to build a close relationship with your teachers, who can help you discuss what's next in your unique path. The teachers' passion truly inspired me and made learning fun. In addition, all of my peers were very like-minded and we all motivated each other.
The school also had many opportunities outside the classroom, such as joining a club, a sports team, a jazz band, or the musical. The opportunities were endless.
Many things connect the students at HSC. One of the things that stood out to me was the third week excursion called E-Week. E-Week is when the students go away for a week to bond and foster community. That's where I built strong relationships and memories that will last a lifetime. The strong sense of community at HSC stems from the initiatives that strive to bring the students closer together.
