The big picture on Kingsway College

We questioned the school administration

1. Who are you, as a school?

"Kingsway College is a private, Christian, boarding and day, co-ed high school (Grades 9-12), inspected by the Ontario Ministry of Education and authorized to grant credits toward the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD). Canadian students can participate in the study-work program and grow additional skills and work experience. It is located in Oshawa, Ontario and is owned and operated by the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Our mission is to reflect Jesus Christ and prepare students for His service."

2. What do you do differently and uniquely well?

Kingsway College is a Christian day and boarding high school where students are known, challenged, and encouraged to grow academically, spiritually, physically, and socially. Our caring faculty foster a close-knit community that welcomes both Canadian and international students. Students discover and develop their gifts through acclaimed touring ministries in acrobatics, band, choir, drama, and strings, alongside varsity athletics, intramural sports, leadership opportunities, and a study-work program that builds responsibility and practical skills. Advanced Placement courses provide additional academic challenge, while Bible classes, small-group studies, and opportunities for Christian service help students deepen their faith. Kingsway College equips young people to lead lives of purpose, service, and excellence.

3. What tradeoffs has your school made to serve families in this way?

While Kingsway College is intentional in teaching Seventh-day Adventist beliefs and biblical principles, we also believe that genuine faith, character, and leadership cannot be compelled. We intentionally give students age-appropriate opportunities to make choices, and to learn from the consequences of those choices, within a caring, structured community. This philosophy extends beyond spiritual life to academics, leadership, behaviour, and personal responsibility. Rather than seeking compliance alone, we seek conviction, preparing students for university and adulthood where thoughtful decisions, integrity, and self-discipline matter far more than external supervision. Our goal is to graduate young adults who choose what is right because they have made those values their own.

4. What key junctures in your school's history have most shaped its present?

Founded in 1903, Kingsway College’s history is deeply connected to a mission of preparing young people for lives of service, leadership, and purpose. Established before Oshawa became a city, Kingsway has been a longstanding part of the local community while also welcoming students from across Canada and around the world.
A defining part of our early history was an emphasis on practical education and responsibility through a work program rooted in agricultural labour. That tradition continues today through our study-work program, where students develop independence, teamwork, and a strong work ethic.
Throughout more than a century of change, Kingsway has remained committed to educating the whole person: mind, body, and spirit. Our history has shaped a school where faith, service, community, and personal growth remain central to the student experience.

5. What type of student is a good fit for your school?

Kingsway College is best suited for families seeking a Christ-centered community where students are encouraged to grow academically, spiritually, socially, and personally. We often pray that God will send us the students who want to be here, who need to be here, and whom He has called to be part of our community.
We recognize that every student is unique, with different gifts, challenges, and goals. Our caring faculty and staff work closely with students and families to help each young person grow within their abilities while striving toward their potential. Kingsway is not designed to provide every possible specialized program or accommodation, but rather to provide a supportive, structured environment where students who value faith, relationships, responsibility, and personal growth can thrive.

6. Under what conditions would you advise a family against choosing your school?

Kingsway College may not be the right fit for every student or family. Families seeking a highly specialized environment with extensive individualized accommodations, intensive therapeutic supports, or programs beyond our current resources may be better served by a school designed specifically for those needs.
As a Seventh-day Adventist Christian school, Kingsway intentionally integrates biblical principles and faith into daily life. Students and families do not need to come from the same background, but they must be respectful of our beliefs, willing to engage in conversations about faith, and comfortable participating in a community guided by Christian values.
Students who are unwilling to accept reasonable expectations regarding respect, responsibility, academic effort, personal conduct, and community standards may also find another educational setting to be a better match. Our goal is to ensure that every student who joins Kingsway is positioned to thrive.

7. To your knowledge, why do families choose your school over others?

Families often choose Kingsway College because they are seeking more than an academic institution, they are looking for a community. Our students become part of a caring, faith-based environment where they are known personally, encouraged to grow, and surrounded by peers and mentors who share a commitment to positive values.
Families are drawn to the breadth of opportunities available for students to discover and develop their gifts, including academics, athletics, music, drama, acrobatics, leadership, service, and spiritual growth. Our size allows students to participate, take on meaningful roles, and be recognized for who they are.
While families may initially choose Kingsway for its Christian environment, boarding experience, or opportunities for growth, many discover that one of the greatest gifts is the lasting relationships formed along the way. Students graduate not only prepared for their next steps, but with lifelong friendships and a strong sense of belonging.

8. How would you characterize your school's image amongst the public?

Kingsway College has a reputation as a welcoming, values-driven school with a quiet but meaningful presence in the Oshawa community. As a school serving minor learners, our campus has intentionally maintained a discreet and secure environment while remaining engaged with the broader community.
Families intentionally choose our boarding community because they value structure, mentorship, independence, and a close-knit environment where students can thrive. Our boarding program provides students with opportunities to build responsibility, lifelong friendships, and a strong sense of belonging.
Locally, many know Kingsway through the Kingsway Greenhouse, community events, and facility rentals. Beyond Oshawa, our touring groups (ABCDS: Acrobatics Aerials, Band, Choir, Drama, and Strings Ensemble) have helped introduce audiences across Ontario and beyond to the talent, dedication, and character of our students.

Academically, Kingsway has expanded its Advanced Placement course offerings, providing students with additional academic challenges and opportunities to prepare for post-secondary studies. In the arts, we have continued to grow our music program with the addition of Strings Ensembles (beginner & intermediate), complementing our established touring groups and giving more students opportunities to develop their creativity and performance skills.
We have also implemented a more intentional cyclical approach to campus improvements and renovations, ensuring that our facilities remain safe, functional, and welcoming for students.
