What Sacred Heart says about their university placement record and services:

  • Virtually all of our graduates go on to a university education because we develop their game plan early. In addition to individual counselling and guidance, students also learn from recent graduates about how to start preparing for their post-secondary years. In Grade 11, students can write PSAT exams to experience lengthy multiple choice formats and to obtain a benchmark. Once in Grade 12, students have weekly compulsory University Preparation that gives them the tools they need: career planning, the university application process, scholarship applications, and resumé writing. Along their Senior School journey, students are supported as they develop their strengths and a well-rounded background including volunteerism and leadership, and are encouraged to apply for scholarships, bursaries, and awards. Overall, students leave Sacred Heart fully equipped to engage in a successful and fulfilling post-secondary academic experience so they can be agents of change in our world.

Holistic and personalized university counselling supports students' choices.

Testimonials from parents and alumni reveal that Sacred Heart School's university counselling program is both comprehensive and personal, guiding students through the emotional and decision-making aspects of university placement.

One of the best parts of my experience has been how well Sacred Heart has prepared me, not just academically but personally. The combination of academics and meaningful opportunities has helped me feel ready for university and beyond. I’ve been at Sacred Heart my whole life, and I truly believe the school’s core values and faith-based foundation have shaped who I am today. They’ve instilled in me integrity and confidence. One experience that really stood out to me was the required university prep class we took in Grade 10. It opened my eyes to everything I needed to do to build a strong college application and made the future feel less overwhelming. Another example is how I took a pre-college course through Cornell this summer and did really well, which I think reflects how the rigour at Sacred Heart prepared me for a fast-paced environment.
Without Sacred Heart School's preparation I am confident that my daughter would not have made it to university in terms of both marks and interest in attending post-secondary education). And I am absolutely confident that, had her guidance teacher not been a trusted confidant and wise guide, my daughter would not have enrolled in the university that has been the perfect place for her. Sacred Heart approaches university counselling in a holistic manner considering not just the outcome (university placement) but also the series of challenging decisions and emotions that are part of this formative experience. My daughter was shepherded throughout her Grade 12 year as she considered a range of possibilities, came to terms with the realities of what living away at university would mean, and discerned her preferred academic and university life goals. This support allowed our daughter to make a confident and independent decision (thanks in part to the guidance counsellor's advice that I step back to allow this to happen) and to learn valuable lessons about how to discern options when the stakes feel high.
The university counsellor I had was incredible. She truly cared about all of her students, and her goal was only to help students find the right university for them and help them be successful in applying there. There was no pressure to go to any type of school or a right or wrong choice. We were truly supported in helping us find our passions and then finding a school and program that aligned with those passions and our own values. Even if each student wanted something different, that was okay. Mrs. MacKenzie provided us with the opportunity to learn all about different universities and colleges, and when we were ready to make our decisions of where to apply, she helped us every step of the way to make sure we were as successful as we could be. I don’t think there is any way I could’ve felt more supported. I was accepted into all the schools I applied to, and when we each chose which university we were going to, there was always a big celebration; everyone was truly excited for each other. I loved the university I chose and would never have applied there if Mrs. MacKenzie hadn’t truly understood what I was looking for and helped me find it in a place I didn’t even know was there. She truly helped us look beyond where we thought we had to go to find where we truly wanted to go. We not only received guidance on applying for university but also on being successful in university as a student and in student life. At the end of the day, Sacred Heart as a whole truly prepared us for university, and the application process was just the next step. I felt completely supported and am incredibly grateful for the help and guidance I received.

A structured and diverse educational approach enhances university readiness.

Feedback from students, alumni, and school information indicates that Sacred Heart’s structured academic program and diverse "diamond model" offer comprehensive preparation for the varied demands of university life.

If there’s one thing I would change, it would be to have a broader selection of course options in senior years. Our classes were strong in the core subjects, but we didn’t have offerings like law, business, or political science—courses that give students a taste of university or career paths. I think it would be helpful to have at least one course in Grade 12 that introduces students to different fields.
Sacred Heart Halifax has a 176-year history, and its reputation in Halifax has long been one of academic excellence. Students leave with many university options and succeed in those environments. Recently, the school has undertaken a structural change to its program. From Junior Primary to Grade 6, students are in a co-ed setting. From Grades 7 to 9, they learn in single-gender environments. Beginning next year, Grades 10 to 12 will also become co-ed, forming what some call a “diamond model.” This change prepares students for university and the wider world. It is a significant shift, one embraced by the community after careful consultation, and it reflects our strategic plan’s emphasis on academics, innovation, sustainability, and diversity.
For me, the school did a great job at balancing academics and fun events like Winter Carnival. From Grade 7, we did exams in the gym, and I got used to writing and having lots of work to do from a young age. That really prepared me and my peers for the workload of Grades 11 and 12 and for planning where we would go for university. There was a lot of support from teachers and principals and lots of extra help sessions. Many teachers were more than willing to stay after hours and make sure we were on the right track, even meeting on holidays. The school rewarded hard work with fun events.

Dedicated teachers committed to academic and personal growth impact student success.

Students and alumni highlight that Sacred Heart School teachers' dedication to fostering both academic success and personal growth plays a crucial role in preparing students for university.

The first thing that I would tell someone new about the school is that it's a very inviting atmosphere. I started at Sacred Heart when I was very little, five years old, senior primary, and I didn't know anybody. All the teachers were very inviting, and you got to know them very well. That became especially important in the high school years, when my friends and I would often have conversations with our teachers in our free time because we knew them so well. Because of that, I think it helped me become who I am now in university and in other aspects of my life.
The teaching at Sacred Heart is what made all the difference for me. The quality of instruction and personal connections teachers make with students really pushes students to be successful. The dynamic between teacher and student I would say is informal with a level of respect. The teachers were who made us passionate about our classes through their passion. They were creative, unique and always adaptable to what was best for the students in the class. For instance, when studying Shakespeare our English teacher Ms. McGuire didn’t just have us read it, she had us understand, watch it and act it out in class to truly grasp an understanding of what we were learning. Ms. Blaine went to extra lengths to use our class to not only teach us dynamic history but also prepare us for university by using different lecture styles and teaching us different note-taking types to help us as students find what style suited us best so that we were prepared when heading off to university. The supportive environment for presentations and original work really gave us confidence and had a positive impact on both our academic and personal development. The teachers at SHSH go the extra mile and that is what really prepared me for university.

A supportive faith-based community nurtures confident individuals.

Reflections from international students and alumni suggest that the close-knit, values-driven community at Sacred Heart School profoundly influences students' confidence and holistic development, encouraging excellence in both personal and academic realms.

I am not exaggerating when I say that Sacred Heart is the reason my daughter was successful at school and able to enrol in and now perform very well in university. We transferred her to Sacred Heart because it was clear that she had fallen into the cracks in public school and no one intended to pull her out. From the time she joined the school, she didn't look back! She enjoyed the balance of academic programming and extracurricular activity, the relational approach that teachers have with students, she felt cared for and seen, and was able to blossom as a leader. My daughter is active in her Catholic faith and she found the school to be a welcoming place to express and practice her faith in a lived rather than in a rules-based way.
My time at Sacred Heart School of Halifax was honestly life-changing. It wasn't just a school, it was a community where I always felt supported, seen, and valued. As an international student, being part of a smaller, tight-knit environment made all the difference. I always felt supported, encouraged, and truly known, which helped me build the confidence to flourish in university and beyond. The values of faith, hope, and love weren't just words at Sacred Heart, they shaped how we lived every day. The school's focus on being the best for the world, not just in it, really stuck with me. Today, I carry that mindset into my work in green energy research, where I'm not just striving for personal success, but working towards solutions that can have a real, positive impact on the planet. What stood out most was how personalized the education felt. Teachers really took the time to understand our strengths, passions, and dreams. Sacred Heart prepared me not just academically, but personally, teaching me how to lead, collaborate, and think globally. For any prospective student: expect a community that will challenge you, believe in you, and inspire you to grow into your best self.
