Highlights from the interview
For me, what I appreciated most about Bishop Strachan School (BSS) was the calibre of the teachers: their expertise, attentiveness, and genuine care. You really feel supported as a student. Everyone is passionate about their subjects, which makes learning a joy. They don’t just teach for grades; they teach to grow your knowledge, helping you truly understand concepts and develop your skills.
The culture at BSS feels very much like a family. From the moment you walk in, everyone is welcoming, and there’s a strong sense of belonging. The community is diverse, so whatever your interests, you can find a place for yourself.
The school encourages students to pursue all of their passions, fostering curiosity and a growth mindset. Students are invited to try new things, build grit, and develop leadership skills. Female leadership, in particular, is emphasized, which has been a longstanding focus at BSS.
I’m lucky to be both an alum and a current staff member, which has given me a unique perspective on the school’s leadership. Our Junior School staff is incredible, and the faculty have diverse backgrounds. Some leaders come from the Toronto District School Board, bringing a broad perspective beyond independent schools.
Our Head of School, Angela Turpra, has been at BSS for many years and provides exceptional, personal leadership. She knows every student’s and parent’s name, understands their needs, and fosters strong relationships.
BSS takes a holistic approach to academics. I loved having exposure to the arts and drama while receiving strong preparation in math and science, which served me well in university. The school’s AP program allows students to pursue advanced study in a range of subjects.
Students are encouraged to try sports, music, theatre, and other activities, even things they haven’t done before. These experiences create lasting memories, build camaraderie, and are celebrated in assemblies, chapels, and house games.
The school community is vibrant and diverse, with students from across Toronto and around the world.
The sense of belonging and attachment to BSS continues long after graduation. Alumni engagement has grown in recent years, with mentorship programs, panels, and networking opportunities that connect current students and graduates socially and academically.
My top reasons to recommend BSS are the care and dedication of the staff, the sense of community, and the opportunities to explore, learn, and try new things.
For me, BSS is still a place where you can grow, learn, and be supported. It is an environment that nurtures curiosity, confidence, and lifelong skills.
