Bill, an alum at Upper Canada College, shared his perspective on UCC’s rigorous academics, exceptional support system, vibrant extracurriculars, strong community culture, lasting relationships, and how the school prepares students for university and life.
Highlights from the interview
Extracurriculars were probably my favourite part of UCC. I’d say they’re an incredibly important part of student life there because outside of academics, you’re doing clubs, teams, and the arts. There are a lot of different options for whatever you’re interested in.
The people I’ve gotten to know over the years were a huge part of my experience… The lasting connections you build stay with you. I’m going into my second year of university now, but I’m still very connected; some of my best friends are still from UCC.
I really like the culture and values. It’s an important aspect of UCC to clearly communicate that the school is built on a culture of mutual respect, diversity, and the ability to get to know many different perspectives, while also maintaining academic excellence, rigour, and a sense of honour.
When I first started, I saw it as just “school,” somewhere I went every day. But over the years, being there for so long, it evolved into a community and something I looked forward to and enjoyed being part of.
One great thing about UCC is that any student can approach any senior member of the leadership team whenever they want and have a casual conversation. They’re always supportive, they get to know you well, and you really feel like you belong at the school with their support.
Academically, I’d say UCC is very rigorous, not just in the IB years but in the pre-IB years as well. It builds a strong foundation starting from the Prep School. You come to expect a certain level and quality of work, which really helps.
UCC is great because you develop along a path, rather than suddenly having to put in a huge effort only in the later years. It’s continuous development, and that’s really important.
I’d say all the students are supportive of one another. Not everyone is friends, but everyone recognizes that we’re part of a shared community. Many describe it as a brotherhood.
In terms of student experience, it depends on the person, but I think you can always find something for yourself. Whatever type of experience you’re looking for, UCC offers it.
The facilities are amazing: a great track, hockey arenas, and excellent classrooms… It’s a great learning environment because you’re always comfortable in the classrooms, which is important for learning.
During university, I’ve maintained a strong connection with the alumni network too… They’re super helpful and very kind. They’re always willing to chat with graduates or students about what has helped them and share advice.
The admissions process was comprehensive… It’s designed well so you can find out if you’re the right fit for UCC, and they can find out too. It’s not just about academics; it’s holistic, which I thought was great
