SSAT Schools
Applying to a private school with SSAT exams
What is the SSAT, and why does it matter for private school admissions? The SSAT, or Secondary School Admission Test, is a standardized exam that can feel intimidating—but understanding it can turn uncertainty into confidence. Many private schools use the SSAT to evaluate a student’s overall abilities rather than mastery of specific subjects, helping schools compare applicants fairly across diverse educational backgrounds. At OUR KIDS, we help demystify the SSAT so you can navigate admissions with clarity.
The SSAT measures skills in quantitative reasoning, reading comprehension, and writing. While the essay section isn’t graded, it is shared with schools alongside the test scores. There are two levels: Middle (Grades 5–7) and Upper (Grades 8–11). Some schools require the SSAT, while others do not, and the weight placed on results can vary. Importantly, the SSAT is not an achievement test—it offers a snapshot of academic strengths and areas for growth.
For nearly 30 years, the OUR KIDS team has visited campuses, spoken with educators, and listened to families to understand how different SSAT schools use this test. Here, you’ll find the guidance you need to make informed decisions about whether the SSAT is part of your child’s academic journey. Read more
