Rising demand and changing expectations
Choosing a school in Calgary today is less about following a clearly defined path and more about navigating a widely varied landscape. Families are comparing programs, touring campuses, speaking with other parents about their experiences, and thinking carefully about what kind of educational environment will help their child thrive. The decision can unfold over months, sometimes even years, as families balance academics, values, logistics, and personality fit.
Many parents describe the process as emotional as well as practical. In the end, it often comes down to something as simple as how they feel walking through a school’s doors. Is the atmosphere warm and inviting? Are the students here kind, as well as self-confident? These types of signals can be as revealing as rankings and numbers alone.
Calgary’s education landscape offers families real choice—whether it’s public (including the Calgary Board of Education), separate (Calgary Catholic School District), charter, or private—each system with its own culture and promise. For some families, private education offers a level of individualized attention or specialized focus they can’t find elsewhere. For others, a public, Catholic, or charter option aligns more closely with their values, location, or budget. The key is reflection: understanding a child’s needs and a family’s priorities, and then finding the school that fits both.

Many families also use the annual OUR KIDS Private School Expo in Calgary as an early step in their school search. By bringing admissions teams from a range of independent schools into one setting, the expo can make it easier to compare programs, ask practical questions about supports and applications, and get a first feel for a school’s culture before booking tours. This year’s Calgary expo takes place on September 20, 2026. For parents still refining a shortlist or hoping to compare faith-based, specialized, and university-preparatory options side by side, it can be a good place to begin. The evolving cost landscape
The decision landscape for families is both complex and competitive, driven by rapid population growth. Calgary's schools are, on average, at 95% capacity, which has, in many cases, led to waitlists and busing challenges.
In Calgary and across Alberta, debates about public funding going to independent, as well as charter schools, have heightened tensions. Concerns about the public school system receiving inadequate funding have led to a citizen-initiated petition calling for the defunding of independent schools, which had garnered close to 40,000 signatures as of mid-December 2025. And in a survey published in December 2025, more than half of Albertans polled said they would support ending provincial government funding for accredited independent schools if a referendum were held.
These pressures have made school choice more visible and more contested than in the past. For families, navigating Calgary’s education landscape now involves balancing availability, values, cost, and long-term fit within a system shaped by both growth and ongoing public debate.
Accessibility and reach of Calgary private schools
“Overall, Alberta's system empowers choice, which also creates anxiety around access. Families often start research early due to lotteries and limited spots,” observes Tim Howie, owner and director of Calgary-based EducationWise Tutors, which delivers tutoring aligned with the Alberta curriculum for students in Grades 1–12.
From 2020–2025, private education enrollment surged by about 12%, with more than 12,000 students added across Alberta, a trend driven by factors such as public school overcrowding and families looking for more customization following the COVID-19 pandemic. “At the same time, the cost of private schooling has risen by about 15–20%, driven by factors such as inflation and facility upgrades,” Howie says.

Families deciding whether to send their child to a private school often begin the process a year or more in advance in response to application deadlines, testing, and waitlists. “The common milestones include school tours, open houses, application deadlines, and financial aid decisions,” notes Malcolm Gagnon, founder of an education centre that provides in-home tutoring in Calgary and the surrounding area, as well as online tutoring across Canada.
“There is growing awareness of the issue of accessibility in private education. Some schools are expanding financial aid programs to attract a more diverse student population, but the cost barrier remains significant,” Gagnon says. “Because of this, the student population at many private schools is often heavily slanted toward those from more affluent families, creating an environment strongly focused on academics. This can be both a benefit and a drawback. An academically-oriented peer environment can motivate students to excel academically. When transitioning to post-secondary education and the workforce, however, the types of people they engage with will be much more diverse. For families whose children attend a private school, it’s important to ensure their children are engaging with broader communities outside of the private school environment.”
What families value most
“It’s the well-roundedness,” says Strathcona-Tweedsmuir School alumnus, Jason Fong, whose private school education allowed him to develop academically, physically, emotionally, and socially, and to become the person he is today—something he is also hoping for, for his own children, who in their turn are also attending STS.
For Glenmore Christian Academy parents Craig and Stephanie Hill, having all four of their children attend a private school has meant providing a place where they can safely learn and grow.
“We want our children to have both roots and wings,” Craig says. “We want the roots to go deep so they’re established, and we want them to have wings to soar. Glenmore Christian Academy, under the leadership that’s there, is doing that for the children. As much as the curriculum and the facility are first-class, it’s those who are giving oversight to the school. They have my profound respect.”
“I am so thankful for leadership,” Stephanie adds. “There’s integrity, and there is authenticity, there’s vulnerability. They learn from mistakes, and they have the humility to say when they miss the mark or where they need to improve. To me, that is a very safe culture. Authenticity, vulnerability, being a learner, always willing to grow, to get feedback from parents and move together in that unified place, we’ve definitely seen that over the span of many years of being at the school.”
The entire family is thankful for the opportunity to attend this private Christian school. “My kids are fans,” says Stephanie, “and we’re so grateful for that.”
For parent Katheryn Carley, whose son attends the Lycée International de Calgary: “The impact on my son’s life, character, and maturity has been a hundred-fold.”
Private schools in Calgary often distinguish themselves by how—and what—they teach. While public schools follow the Alberta curriculum, many Calgary independent schools build on it, seeking to enrich student learning in ways that reflect their educational philosophy, a specialized focus, or a global outlook.
For many families, this variety is the main reason for looking beyond the public school system: they aren’t necessarily searching for a “better” school, but rather for a better fit. School profiles and parent reviews can help families compare the cultures, learning supports, and program strengths of private schools across Calgary.
Shifting public perceptions of private schools
Public perception of independent schools is changing. Increasingly, more families view Calgary’s private schools less as exclusive enclaves and more as specialized environments that deliver targeted opportunities such as small classes, individualized attention, enriched programs, or stronger student supports. At the same time, families are asking more questions about equity and accountability, prompting schools to explain not just what they offer, but also why it matters.
Together, these trends point to a sector that’s in transition. Parents are weighing cost, value, accessibility, and mission more than ever. Schools that communicate clearly, invest wisely, and stay connected to the realities of local families are the ones shaping the next chapter of private education in Calgary.
Future outlook for the private school sector
In Calgary, the private school sector is changing. Demand remains strong (and in some cases is growing) as families reassess what they want for their child’s education amid crowded classrooms, changing curricula, and increased attention to student well-being. Schools offering clear areas of strength—for example, in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM); the arts; athletics; outdoor learning; or accelerated academics—are seeing the most interest, suggesting a move toward program-specific value rather than prestige alone.
Based on our conversations with Calgary parents, the families who feel the most confident in their choice tend to be those who approach it as a partnership, seeing education not as a product they buy, but rather as something they build together, alongside school administration, teachers, other students and families, and a school community that shares their vision for their children’s future.
