How Calgary families define “value” in education
Choosing among private schools in Calgary often comes down to one central question: what counts as “value” for a specific child and family. For many parents, that calculation blends practical constraints (tuition and fees) with less measurable factors, such as community fit, program strength, and day-to-day student experience.
Private schools offer smaller classes and enriched programs, which are a major draw for Calgary families. However, cost remains a significant barrier. Private school tuition in Calgary has been rising, and families are more conscious of the value they’re getting. At the same time, demand has remained strong, especially for private schools’ specialized programs, smaller class sizes, and environments that offer more structure or enrichment.
“There is growing awareness about accessibility in private education. Some schools are expanding financial aid programs to attract a more diverse student population. Still, the cost barrier remains significant,” says Malcolm Gagnon, founder of an education centre, which provides in-home tutoring in Calgary and the area, and online tutoring Canada-wide.
In Calgary, access to private education is largely shaped by financial factors. Families considering private school think beyond whether they can pay tuition in a given year. They also consider how fees, payment schedules, and additional costs fit into their household budget and long-term plans.
Compare Calgary private schools in one place
Many families also use the annual OUR KIDS Private School Expo in Calgary as an early step in their school search. By bringing admissions teams from a range of independent schools into one setting, the expo can make it easier to compare programs, ask practical questions about supports and applications, and get a first feel for a school’s culture before booking tours. This year’s Calgary expo takes place on September 20, 2026. For parents still refining a shortlist or hoping to compare faith-based, specialized, and university-preparatory options side by side, it can be a good place to begin. Financial aid, scholarships, and flexible payment models
As tuition costs increase, financial aid and bursary programs are becoming a central part of Calgary’s private school landscape. Some schools allocate between 5% and 20% of their operating budget to needs-based assistance, while others use tiered tuition models, sibling discounts, or extended payment plans to reduce the upfront burden. Even so, accessibility remains uneven. Families frequently cite rising housing, childcare, and transportation costs as some of the barriers complicating their decision to pursue independent schooling, regardless of how much they might want it.
The financial question extends beyond affordability to predictability. Parents want clarity on annual tuition increases, transparency around how fees are allocated, and reassurance that tuition increases correlate with tangible improvements in areas such as staffing, class size, and student support. They want to understand where the money is going.
Balancing investment and outcome: Perspectives from Calgary families
A common thread in the families’ accounts is how quickly “fit” is felt in practice.
“We realized this was a special opportunity for our daughters,” says Jennifer Forbes, parent at River Valley School. “The things the students and staff were doing made that clear. At that point, I knew both my children would enroll here.”
For Jennifer, that sense of fit deepened over time and became especially visible in her eldest daughter’s development. “My eldest daughter was a shy child, especially in the early grades,” Jennifer recalls. “At the end of each year, the school reviews her progress and provides a personal development binder. A few years ago, on the last page, my daughter wrote, ‘I just want you to know that I feel safe here.’ I was really touched by that. That doesn’t just mean shelter. It means being safe to fail, safe to try, and safe to make mistakes. And that’s what we need.”
Craig and Stephanie Hill, parents at Glenmore Christian Academy (GCA), have sent all four of their children to GCA. They appreciate that the private Christian school’s values system aligns with theirs, and when enrolling their first child there, they felt that GCA would complement their family’s core values.
“We took this decision very, very carefully, and we viewed a lot of options. We really wanted an atmosphere that was going to be noted for its caring community and the caring teachers,” Craig says.
For the Hills, ensuring the school met all benchmarks was essential. “The academics were very, very high.” But when they were looking for a school for their first child, they also asked themselves questions such as, “How is he going to integrate? Will this be a safe place for our kid? Will he feel embraced, comfortable and safe?” Over the long term, “Can this school facilitate the growth from an educational and academic standpoint?” And in the immediate term, “Is our little guy going to be OK?”
For the Hill family, as for many others, the answer has been a resounding “Yes!”
