Comme autre solution, les écoles pour enfants ayant des besoins spéciaux s'adressent aux élèves qui ont une déficience physique, une déficience mentale, un trouble de la communication, un trouble du comportement, ou à ceux qui sont doués. L'inscription est un choix, déterminé en fonction de la politique de l'école ou de ceux qui ont les meilleurs intérêts de l'élève à cœur. Il existe un processus d'inscription officiel, décrit par l'autorité en matière d'éducation qui régit l'endroit où l'école pour enfants ayant des besoins spéciaux est située.

Selon la loi, toutes les écoles publiques doivent avoir des programmes d'éducation spécialisée. Cependant, toutes les écoles ne peuvent pas toujours répondre aux besoins spéciaux de votre enfant. Conséquemment, les parents peuvent faire un choix à partir d'une variété d'écoles qui fournissent un milieu d'apprentissage convenable et structuré pour les enfants ayant des besoins importants.

Certains parents peuvent trouver difficile d'inscrire leurs enfants dans des écoles pour enfants ayant des besoins spéciaux en raison d'obstacles financiers. Heureusement, par l'entremise d'organismes publics et privés, le financement est disponible dans bon nombre de provinces et d'états partout en Amérique du Nord.

L'éducation spécialisée utilise un programme spécialement conçu par une équipe pour aborder les besoins de chaque élève afin de promouvoir son processus d'apprentissage; ce programme s'adapte au progrès de l'élève. Ainsi, les programmes sont uniques à chaque élève dans les écoles pour enfants ayant des besoins spéciaux. Le profil d'études comprend ordinairement des sujets non scolaires. L'objectif de ces sujets est d'aider les élèves à établir le fondement qui les préparera à la vie après l'école, au travail ou aux études postsecondaires, et les aidera à s'intégrer dans leur communauté.
