The Our Kids review of Camp Kahuna

    our take

Camp Kahuna offers all the benefits and fun of camping and then some, from traditional activities to BMX bike racing to celebrity guests. The camps were founded in 1993 as an extension of Scott Graham’s work with young people around bullying and self-esteem. So, while the programs are notably varied, the intention is to help young people find their talents, their voices, and to build empathetic leadership skills in a range of collaborative contexts. Both day and overnight sessions are available, and both are close to home yet proximate to a wealth of green space. The day camps are on a 65-acre property abutting the escarpment, and includes indoor, outdoor, and nature environments. The overnight sessions are also nicely close by, hosted at the Blue Springs Scout Reserve, 200 acres of mixed woodland. Half-week overnight sessions are a nice addition, providing a chance for kids to get a sense of what the experience is like, warming them to the longer full-week sessions.

I love Kahuna. My favourite part was the carnival: jousting, dunk tank, bouncy castle, obstacle course, foam party and cotton candy. AMAZING!

Incorporating leadership skills at camp is brilliant. The strategies you have taught my son and daughter will help them throughout their lives. Thank you from a grateful dad. - Marti

My son has been to many camps. He has not been a fan of camp until now. I don't know what you have done, but my son absolutely loved Kahuna. • You Changed is Life

My grandson has gone through a year of hell. His mother is in jail and Nicholas does not have a father. When Nicholas came to me he would not speak a word. He seemed lifeless. After going to your camp I can't get him to stop talking. He is happy again. You make a significant difference in the lives you touch. I hope other children have the same success as my Nicholas.

    • Hidden Gem

Camp Kahuna is a hidden gem. I didn't realize there was a sleep away camp so close to home. It was nice to realize that my son was only 20 minutes from our house, but could still experience a week of camp. Great job! Robert

    • What an Incredible Experience

I just wanted to take a moment to thank you for creating an amazing camp experience. My son, Sammi absolutely loved his week with you. He told me he met a famous rock star, I guess that was Alan Frew from Glass Tiger, was involved in an afternoon carnival and saw a BMX bike stunt show. Every day he comes up with an other exciting camp experience or story about camp. I assume it must take alot of work to put this camp together. Sami even said he loved the food. I wasn't expecting that. I was very impressed with the quality of counselors you hired. They obviously love children. I felt secure leaving my son with you and so glad he was able to experience camp. Thank you again. I will be highly recommending your camp to my friends. See you next year. Claudette Robinson

    • Making a Difference

Hi Scott, I thought I would take a moment and let you know that we were quite impressed with Adam’s camp experience. He returned home full of stories of the activities and fun he had while at your camp. We attended the Spoons concert and I think it was then, that I realized just how much of yourself you put into the camp. It shows and from a parents’ perspective, it is impressive. I did notice the camper to staff ratio and, while I know this summer may have been unique, it was great to see. The staff that were there the night of the concert were certainly engaged and encouraging of the campers. One note, is that Adam returned home with a head full of lice. I realize now (!) not at all unusual for a camp experience. Our daughter also attends a camp and they check each of the kids for lice upon arrival and if they find it, treat the kids. Just a note to you, that you may wish to consider this. Having said that, as a parent, I now know to check the kids when they return home (in adam’s case, our babysitter—a former camp counselor—discovered it on Adam about 4 days after he returned home). Scott, it seems you run a great camp experience and if Adam wishes to return next summer, we will definitely let him attend. Thank you, Lorraine and Joe Ladha

    • Impressions

Hey Scott I owe you a big Thank You, Thank You Thank You Phillip was in one of your school programs and he spent 2 weeks at Kahuna day camp. Next year he would really like to join the over night program. We heard from Karim how awesome it was. Your name has come up quite often this summer from Phillip. Your group really had a strong impression on him and it really stuck with him. He spent a week at his grandma's house this summer with his cousins. One of his cousins is a really cool dude and Phillip really looks up to him. When we picked him up after the week he was saying that he prefers your meaning of being cool and he went on to explain. We also spent a week in Calgary with friends. We had an awesome time. We stayed with an school mate of Phillip's from a few years ago. His friend is going through a hard time (his dad just left the family) and I told Phillip that he may have to give in to him a little bit but I still really wanted him to have a good time. It was very good over all but Phillip came to me a few times and said "Thank God for Scott Graham". So again Thank you, Thank You Thank You. The kids do really benefit from your programs. Linda Brazier

    • From a Camp Counselor's mom

Both Bernie and I just want to thank you for giving Alexandra the opportunity to work with you this year. She was up bright and early every day with the week courses, and all she could do was talk about how much she enjoyed it, and Kahuna was the icing on the cake! She worked hard at camp and at Dairy Queen so not much leisure time for her this summer, but she still says it was the best summer she has had and couldn’t imagine spending it any other way. The experience has given her more confidence in herself and a bit more perspective on how she sees her future. Again, many thanks, and if you happen to book April Wine next summer I will be there even if Alex isn’t. Cheers, Bev

    • Camp Testimonies

Hi Scott I just wanted to say Thank You! My son Brett has never really spent more than a couple of nights without me. He suffers from anxiety. I wondered if I should tell you..but wanted Brett to just blend in. Blend in he did! He had the best time. He still is talking about it and cannot wait to come back next year.It was an amazing week all the way around. What a relief for me when I came on Thursday night to see him dancing and laughing with everyone!! Thank You! Sarah Willwerth
