More than just summer camp

For those deeply interested in robotics, there are ways to engage longer term in learning robotics, beyond summer sessions. This includes programs that run year round and overnight camps that offer a deep immersion in this technology. Use our site to find different options below.

A brief look at curriculum at a typical kids' robotics camp

What can you expect in a robotics camp? These educational camps encourage youth to deepen learning in this exciting subject. They work with, toy with and learn all about assembling robots that range in complexity from entry level kits to more advanced projects.

Typically working in small teams, robotics camp students use the design systems to compete in fun, real-world challenges like robo-soccer, obstacle courses, capture-the-flag, tag, maze solving, and much more! Many camps use the VEX® Robotics Design System, a user-friendly and powerful tool, used in major regional and national robotics competitions, as well as in many high school and university-level robotics classes.

This is just one example of innovation in robotics. Camps near you now offer LEGO robotics and other cutting edge technologies.

Each day, camp will bring new challenges, as your team’s robot develops and morphs. Advanced students will have the opportunity to learn about building complex sensors, advanced robot arms, drive trains and programming "smarter" robots. In a robotics camp near you, robots built by students will enter an electrifying competition and demonstration at the end of the camp and may even qualify for broader competition and recognition.

Robotics is part of an ever-increasing selection of specializations found among education and technology camps. And all of these options are fascinating and fun! Kids interested in robotics should also check out the following:

Engineering camps offer more in-depth instruction in engineering, a critical aspect of robotics, certainly, but also a much broader field, with diverse applications.

Lego camps are ideal for younger kids who love hands-on play, and are not quite ready to work with series circuits and complex electronics.

Math camps are ideal for kids interested in the functions underlying robotics and related technologies.

Makerspace camps are similar to robotics in that they focus on projects with a practical application but these are often much broader and more diversely creative in their curriculum.

Minecraft camps (like LEGO) are ideal for younger kids, especially those who can't get enough of this creative building game.

Coding camps and classes are ideal for teens and older kids who interested in the broader world of coding.

STEAM camps' broad curriculum combines science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics. A number of these disciplines are closely related to robotics but STEAM curriculum is more inclusive and even holistic.

STEM camps focus on the approach to learning that combines science, tech, engineering and math.

Questions parents should ask robotics camps

When choosing a robotics camps, parents will be concerned about more than just the camp curriculum and location. Here’s a brief glance at some other questions you might ask camps:

  • What programming or coding (WeDo, Arduino, VEX, etc., depending on your advancement) are expected prerequisites for the session you’re enrolling in?
  • What programming languages will they be learning in the course of the session?
  • How much teaching experience do the camp and session leaders have?
  • What is the ratio of leaders and counselors to kids and teens? You may also want to find out how campers are grouped and who your child(ren)’s group leader will be.
  • Does the camp have any policies about food, related to allergies or special diets, etc?
  • When is the daily pickup and dropoff, and how rigidly are parents expected to follow these times?
  • What are kids expected to bring? And what will they take home from the camp?

Those are just a few questions you should be mindful of.
