Defining courage

“It’s my firm belief,” says Aaron Lamontagne, “that the best people in the world don’t have to be the smartest, the strongest or the fastest.” Instead his “favourite people have always been the ones that are the most interested ... the ones that want to hear your stories.” In his work for Academie Duello’s Knight Camp in Vancouver, he sees firsthand the value of curiosity. It’s so important for kids to be “interested in things [they] don’t know about, interested in something different or something new.”

I think that’s the most fantastic thing about kids, their deep and abiding curiosity about what life is like and what people are like.

What are the benefits of curiosity?

In his work with Knight Camp, Lamontagne is well-versed in the world of swordplay, history and knights, but the value of curiosity is apparent in every program he leads. It’s “absolutely an important trait to develop.” A curious child, asking a lot of questions, gains an edge in personal development. “It’s sort of a trope,” he says, “[a] child incessantly asking you ‘why,’ but I think that’s the most fantastic thing about kids, [their] deep and abiding curiosity about what life is like and what people are like.”

Curiosity enables children to develop their imagination and creativity in new ways. Lamontagne uses an example of the purposes of a paperclip to demonstrate a child’s curiosity in comparison to an adult’s like his own.

Most adults would be restricted to coming up with two or three original uses for a paperclip, but kids in his camp program “They’d make different shapes out of it, or letters out of it.” For him, “it was fascinating to see the unfettered nature of what [they would] do.” Camp encourages this form of intellectual freedom, and we “don’t try to [push] them in a specific direction.”

That experimental aspect is important at many camps, and it’s essential to kids’ makeup. They don’t have some typical adult restrictions in mind when confronted with a task. As Lamontagne says, “they don’t know that there are questions they shouldn’t ask.” Child-like curiosity is nurtured in camp, and given the right experiences, they can retain this into adulthood.

He also believes that empathy is an important byproduct of well-developed curiosity. “It expands [kids’] minds, [they] wonder why the world is the way it is,” he says. “It makes them recognize difference as being interesting instead of scary [and] ... it makes [them] more tolerant.”

Curious children are also more likely to:

  • remember information they’re taught
  • remain engaged with tasks
  • expand their worldview and knowledge
  • learn about other perspectives and step out of their comfort zones

It’s important to support a child’s curiosity from a young age so discover on their own the value of exploring their interests.

What does curiosity look like?

“One of the ways that I’ve seen curiosity [flourish is in the way] we give the kids lots and lots of ways to be creative,” Lamontagne begins to explain. One summer, Lamontagne asked campers to draw whatever they wanted, as long as they could prove that what they were drawing was used at some point in history. He advised them to read through the books they had, ask their teachers, talk to other campers, or look through the artifacts in the nearby museum. “One kid sifted through 4 different books trying to find the spear-head that he wanted,” he marvels.

“[One other] idea that’s always really resonated with me is this idea of tangential learning.” This happens when you’re exposed to a topic you’re vaguely familiar with, but in a new context like camp, you decide to learn more about it. At Knight Camp, they teach children about knights, swordplay and instruction but they have also provided the campers with a platform to develop curiosity by asking questions, then discovering their own answers.

How to develop curiosity

Children are naturally inquisitive and eager to learn about their surroundings. In the early years of elementary school, children are typically curious about physical activity and social interaction with others. The classroom provides opportunity for children to be curious about their interests. What happens to some kids is that curiosity gets dulled by sameness or over-exposure to media and video games, etc. Camp encourages kids to interact with new friends and “exposes children and young people to lots of new ideas,” Lamontagne believes.

In the open-ended, instructional atmosphere of camp, enthusiasm for learning is liberated. They can invest in learning about a topic they’re passionate about. Once they explore their curiosity, studies have shown, their brain chemistry changes. They learn and remember more information when it’s learning about something they’re actively curious about.

Lamontagne says, “we try to foster this curiosity in our kids by introducing them to [new things].”

At Knight Camp, the instructors teach 10 Knightly Virtues to their campers. They ask campers to reflect on how they could practice the virtues in their daily lives and then come back and discuss their experiences. “As we teach about virtue, we try to teach them about ways to understand and grow their [internal] goodness,” he says.“They become curious about what it means to be good people.”

Want your child to enhance their curiosity?

To encourage the development of curiosity in your child, you can do the following:

  • Encourage them to ask questions about things they aren’t certain about.
  • Point out things around you (like animals, plants, buildings or colours) to spark curiosity.
  • Ask them what their interests are and let them develop that interest further.
  • Provide them with materials to encourage their curiosity (ex. art supplies or writing tools).
  • Answer questions but encourage them to try and give their own answers.
  • Register your child in a camp that will nurture their innate curiosity.

  • Going offline

All camps have a device policy, and some are stricter than others. At Nominingue the policy is simple: no devices at all. And the campers wouldn’t want it any other way. [Read more]
