The variety of ways to work on your tennis game

There's a variety of ways kids and teens can improve and develop their tennis game. Some of the following options are covered in the list above, but you can use our site to find discrete lists or further information about the following options:

Tennis summer camps for kids and teens

Tennis day camps: day camps specializing in tennis or offering it as one activity among others.
Overnight tennis camps: sleepover camps specializing in tennis or offering it as an activity.
After-school tennis lessons: offered throughout the school year at tennis and sports clubs.
Schools with tennis programs: some secondary schools offer intensive or semi-competitive tennis programs.

    Different tennis camp formats

Most tennis camps are offered in the summer. This includes both day and overnight tennis camps. And as mentioned, some of these specialize in tennis and offer intensive training in this sport, while others offer tennis as one activity among others.

The format in which tennis is taught varies between camps. Many camps teach it through one-on-one lessons. Others teach it through group lessons.

One-on-one lessons: These are private lessons with a qualified tennis instructor. Your child will receive hands-on, targeted skills training. The instructor will be able to tailor the lessons to your child’s abilities, and focus on their key strengths and weaknesses. If they’re a beginner, your child will really learn the basics of the game.

Group lessons: Here, your child will learn with a group of kids, usually of around the same age and skill level. The size of the group varies: it can be anywhere from 3 to 30 kids. Your child will be able to train, practice, and play competitive matches with other kids. Sometimes this can speed up the development of their game.

The majority of tennis camps offer a combination of both these types of lessons. This allows your child to receive a number of benefits. They’ll get expert, tailored training and instruction from a top-notch instructor. They’ll also learn and practice with other kids, play competitive matches, and have fun in a group setting.

    Skills learned in tennis camps

Tennis camps, no matter the format and setting, teach a broad scope of skills. These include the following:

Your child may also learn about the following: the rules of tennis and tennis etiquette, the mental part of the game, sportsmanship, tournament formats and opportunities, tennis organizations, tennis training regimens, and fitness training regimens.

    Questions to ask tennis programs

It’s important to visit any camp you’re seriously considering. Meet with their directors and tennis staff.

Make sure you ask lots of questions. Here are some critical ones to get you started:

    You might also consider

If your child is interested in other sports, you may look into other sports camps. You’ll find no shortage here: there are camps across the country to satisfy the most sporty of kids. Below, we list just a few of the options available

Basketball camps can enable your son or daughter to improve their fitness,  learn skills,  develop their game, and enjoy the challenge of competition. They’re also a great way to have fun, meet new people, and make friends. Many of the skills learned in basketball—such as footwork, hand-eye coordination, defensive and offensive positioning, and focus and awareness—are also valuable for tennis. This is why tennis and basketball are considered good “cross-training” sports.

Soccer camps also enable your child to enjoy the challenge of competition in a friendly and social environment. In addition to soccer-specific skills, they can help your child learn and develop confidence, leadership, teamwork, and other critical interpersonal skills.

Baseball camps are offered at many different levels and provide fun and competition for kids interested in this sport. They teach skills such as throwing, catching, hitting, running the bases, and much more.

Health and fitness camps focus on practical education in nutrition and fitness. This can involve personal training that targets specific muscle groups used in golf, or may simply improve overall fitness, manage weight, and promote healthy living.

Leadership training camps encourage self-improvement and develop skills like sportsmanship and leadership. They’re great for kids interested in growing, developing, and maturing, whether that’s on the tennis court or somewhere else.

    Choosing the right program

To find the right tennis camp for your child, check out the Our Kids Camp and Program Expo, held every year in the winter. At the expo, you can meet with the staff of many different tennis camps and programs, and get your questions answered. You can also meet with many other types of camps.
