On behalf of the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science at Queen’s University, we would like to introduce you to Connections: Queen's Summer Engineering Academy (QSEA) Senior. This non-credit experiential education program offers engineering focused courses for students currently in grades 9-11 (going into Grade 10 - 12 in Sept 2023). The courses provide an overview of Engineering in a university setting, and caters to Canadian high school students.
QSEA Senior is available in both one-week and multiple-week versions as there are multiple different courses to choose from within July and August of 2023 for a total of 6 weeks.
Please find more information about about our course offerings below:
Course A: Engineering the Future of Ingenuity
Course Description: Technology is evolving everywhere. Through innovation and collaboration, our participants will investigate the intricate relationship between hardware and software with hands-on activities, as well as develop and interact with artificially intelligent programs. This course will provide practical learning opportunities for students to explore mechatronics that enhance human productivity, safety, performance, and quality of life for all. Throughout this course, participants will explore the following engineering streams (disciplines) offered by the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science at Queen’s: Mechatronics (Computer, Mechanical, Electrical), AI (Computer), Robotics (Electrical).
Course B: Engineering the Body and Beyond
Course Description: Advances in technology are helping more patients live healthier lives. Our participants will explore the role of technology in medicine, investigating current technological practices and using the engineering design process to develop new solutions to existing challenges in healthcare. In doing so, participants will understand the relationship between engineering, the medicinal fields, ethical dilemmas, and how to develop solutions accessible to all. Throughout this course, participants will explore the following engineering streams (disciplines) offered by the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science at Queen’s: Biochemical (Chemical), Biomedical (Chemical, Electrical), Biomechanical (Mechanical)
Course C: Engineering the Natural and Built Environments of Tomorrow
Course Description: The negative impacts of climate change are real and present. Unprecedented in scale, engineers are urgently developing innovative solutions to implement globally. In this course, participants will explore many of these engineering solutions while also developing their own through collaboration and creativity. Participants will learn how to design, build, and test various structures – to then analyze the impact they have on the natural world and society as a whole. Throughout this course, participants will explore the following engineering streams (disciplines) offered by the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science at Queen’s: Structural (Civil), Geotechnical (Civil, Geological), Hydrotechnical (Civil), Environmental, Chemical Processing (Mining).
Course D: Introduction to Engineering
Course Description: Engineering is for everyone, everywhere. Throughout this course, participants will learn and apply new critical thinking techniques to complete various hands-on workshops; whether new to the world of engineering or experienced, our team has developed a welcoming learning experience for all. Participants will learn the basics of the major engineering disciplines (civil, mechanical, electrical, computer, geological, mining), as well as visit various laboratories on campus and talk with a variety of guests about their engineering experiences – all here at Queen’s University.
