(5) Overall experience

Juliet had some nerves ahead of going to camp because it was a new experience for her. Her mood during and after camp was very positive. Particularly, in the weeks after camp we can sense how she has matured and developed from the experience. We will definitely be sending her back to Camp Wenonah (she’s already signed up for next year). It is very meaningful to us that she has an opportunity to try new things in an outdoor setting.

(4.5) Reason for choosing the camp

We chose this camp because of a family connection. Juliet’s uncle has worked at the camp for many years. As a result, our family is very familiar with the camp site, the programming, and the staff. Having a comfort level with a camp is extremely important to us to ensure that Juliet is in safe hands.

(4.5) Program quality and activities

Juliet did the one-week camp session this past summer, and I really appreciated how Camp Wenonah structured the programming. They kept the cabin together throughout the week, which meant the campers all got a chance to connect and try all of the different activities. Juliet particularly enjoyed all of the water-based activities (the water trampoline was a favourite), the arts and crafts, and the climbing wall.

(5) Social dynamics and experience

Yes, Juliet was able to make friends quite quickly. As mentioned previously, she did not know anyone in her cabin, but she quickly bonded with a few girls who really helped her develop through the week. There were no bullying-related issues throughout the week. Everyone was very friendly and inclusive. The counsellors also ensured that the cabin was friendly.

(4) Skills and growth

I thought Juliet really gained a sense of independence by attending Camp Wenonah for one week in July. It is very evident in her demeanor after camp that she realizes that she can do anything she sets her mind to. On top of that, she also really liked the songs and skits throughout the weekend and has been inspired since being home.

(5) Staff/Instructors/Counsellors

The staff at Camp Wenonah are some of the friendliest and most professional staff that I have encountered. Both of Juliet's counsellors were fantastic, and I believe that she really looked up to both of them. I found that the senior staff were also extremely helpful. As a parent who was sending his child to camp for the first time, I was nervous (perhaps more than she was), and I really appreciated the phone call I got 2 days into the session, where they told me that she was having a great time. It meant everything to me.

(4.5) Preparation and packing

Camp Wenonah provided a packing list in its camper handbook ahead of camp that I found very valuable to pack Juliet for camp. The handbook, as well, was very helpful, as she and I reviewed it together so that she knew what to expect in prep for her week away from home.

(4.5) Advice and tips

All in all, I feel like the folks at Camp Wenonah do a wonderful job preparing children and parents for the camp experience. There are a number of sessions available in the winter and spring months for families to learn about camp. During the session, the campers are very well taken care of with all of their needs. I really appreciate the thoughtfulness of all staff at Camp Wenonah.

"A fantastic first camp experience for my kiddo. They felt confident and happy and were thrilled by the experience."

I was a camper at Camp Wenonah starting in the late 90s. I then worked on staff for many years, and I remain active as an alumnus. This year, I sent my child to camp for the first time. It was very im... Read full review
