Who are you as an organization?
Jeanette’s Cakes hosts cake decorating, baking and cooking camps (ages 8+) at its Oakville studio. Location has 24 workstations with the latest tools and equipment. It is health-certified and nut-free. Events are facilitated by a professional baker/chef. Our sessions are educational, creative and fun. We host parties/team building year round for children age 6+ and adults.
What do you do differently or uniquely well?
"Now more than ever it is important for people to get back into the kitchen, making food from scratch with healthy and good ingredients. We are here to arm our students with oodles of tips and tricks that will make cooking and baking a joy."
Who are your staff and counsellors?
"Our programme is taught by our programme leader who has 30+ years of professional cooking and baking experience, with 15 years of teaching experience. Our participants feel right at home and enjoy the camaraderie that is fostered in our small group sessions."
What do families need to know about registration?
"Our camps are open to anyone who is interested in cooking and baking. Registration can be cancelled 6 weeks ahead of the start date for your camp. A $55.00 processing fee applies for all cancelled registrations. "
Since the provincial government has authorised summer day camps, Jeanettes’s Cakes will be offering baking, cooking and cake decorating camps this summer and are taking bookings now . We considered using Zoom and other available technology to conduct our online camps this summer, but very quickly realised that online camps will not work for culinary camps: • Face-to-face Camps serve the dual purpose of offering campers lots of fun and learning and free them from daycare while their parents are at work or working from home. • Having spent the last 3 months of school doing online classes and connecting with friends via Zoom kids are desperate for some face-to-face interaction. • Very few (if any) home kitchens are equipped with all the tools and equipment needed for cooking, baking and cake decorating (electric mixers, turntables, piping tips, measuring cups, scales, full range of baking pans, etc.) which a fully-equipped culinary studio such as the one at Jeanette’s Cakes does. It will be difficult for the online instructor to demonstrate the use of tools when participants use different equipment and challenging for kids to adapt video instructions and recipes to what is available at home. • Online baking and cooking necessitate the use of stoves and ovens. Online camps done at home will require adult supervision of kids not experienced in kitchen safety and operating potentially dangerous electrical equipment.

Jeanette Bulger has said that “You are never too young or too old to begin your journey in this wonderful form of art.” There’s a lot in that, both in terms of age, involvement, and how she conceives of baking. She approaches it as an art and anyone who has seen her work can vouch for that—she’s exceptionally skilled, and her cakes are truly works of art. Her location is a professional, working bakery; the facilities are top notch, as is the approach and instruction. Kids who attend the sessions and camps experience that environment first hand and, while there’s a lot fun, there’s the right amount of seriousness as well. The work they see being done there, as well as the perspective that Jeanette brings to it, is inspiring, particularly for young people who share the passion. The skills they learn, too, are of a high level—this isn’t an opportunity for kids just to muck about, but rather to really learn something of the art as well as the science of baking.

My daughters, Bridget and Beatrice Cobham attended your unicorn cupcake summer camp session last year. They both really enjoyed it, and would love to return for a couple of camps this summer.

Washrooms Facilities
Is Jeanette's Cakes technology free? Yes We are fine with kids bringing their phones to be in touch with their parents. We have found that kids connect better with other campers when they do not have their phones on hand.
