Explore architectural model-making at Carleton University

High school students interested in architecture can spend a week at Carleton University’s school of architecture, immersed in model-making and learning to represent their creative ideas.

The Imagine Architecture program has a few spots available for LAB 103, which takes place from July 21 to 25 at the Architecture Building on Carleton’s campus in Ottawa, Ont.

The focus of LAB 103 is small model-building and craft. Participants will activate memory for their design of a clubhouse. Students will translate sketches into model form, do model explorations, and capture ideas with photography and Adobe Photoshop. The week encompasses plan and section drawings, multimedia, collage, thinking in scale, and portfolio presentations. Students will leave with new thinking and making skills.

The tuition fee of $730 + HST includes a hot daily lunch and all materials. The program runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. ET.

Lead instructor Sam Lane-Smith is a multidisciplinary designer and skilled maker who brings the joy of craft into his work. Sam graduated with a Master of Architecture from Carleton University with a thesis project of about 150 models.

Alongside his architecture design work, Sam has an art practice making copper tree sculptures, one of which was presented as a ceremonial gift from the Government of Canada to the Haida Nation. His knowledge of making and physical design complements the range of technical drawing and abstract thinking skills required in architecture.

The teaching team includes Instructor Daphne Stams, coordinator of Imagine Architecture, and Studio Assistant Noah Chatel, an alumnus of the Imagine Architecture program.
