Neither of my boys have taken to sports across the different activities and programs that we signed them up for. This was the first program where they brought up signing up for multiple weeks to continue attending as they enjoyed the activities. They felt empowered by the activities as well as the folks that administered the sessions. We are planning to sign them up again for the 2026 season. The flexibility of the scheduling is also very helpful as we were able to pick weeks for the kids to attend around the rest of our summer schedule.
I paddle on a dragonboat team every summer and the program at Sunnyside was a good way to share that enjoyment with my kids without having them commit to a team (granted there are not too many youth dragonboat programs in the GTA). The program certainly delivered in what I wanted my kids to experience.
Both of my kids are not the sportiest. This program was a good mix of physical activities and STEM activities while also being outside. They enjoyed the outrigger canoe activities, as they could pilot their own crafts, and they felt very empowered by the ability to move and steer the boats on their own, even though the boats were much larger than them!
For one of the weeks, it was just my two kids who were signed up. For the rest, there was a good mix of kids of different ages that attended the sessions. They did not bring up any issues with the other kids and enjoyed the activities where all kids were involved. They also attended a session where they were able to fill a dragonboat with kids from another camp.
The kids were asked to try the different crafts available to them throughout the sessions (canoes, standup paddleboards, outrigger canoes, kayaks, and dragonboat). This allowed the kids to experience them and express their opinions on which they liked and disliked. The most important aspect to me was that they were able to gain the confidence to try these different crafts that they had not previously been on. It can be intimidating and scary but the staff were very supportive and encouraging.
Staff were very open throughout the program and very amenable to requests during signup. A WhatsApp thread was created for each week to allow for communication during the sessions and to give updates on daily activities. They also shared picture of the kids as during their activities. A welcome email was sent for each week so parents and kids know what to expect and what to bring for the sessions.
This camp will help to grow kids' comfort with the water, though kids should already have some level of comfort with the water from swimming lessons etc. The staff are very supportive and knowledgeable in terms of making sure the kids understand and respect water safety. They are outdoors for most of the day, so make sure to bring sunscreen!
"They both gained confidence on the water and teamwork skills. They also gained independence getting there and back."
My daughter enjoyed it, but I think they were a bit bored, as her and her friend were much older and there weren't a lot their age. We would have loved to see more paddle and more opportunities for st... Read full review
