    COVID-19 Response

Health and safety are always our priority. Due to the COVID-19 pandemics, we conduct a policy to protect our participants, such as the requirement of double vaccinations for all participants, triple vaccinations & rapid tests before trips for staff. To reduce physical contact with others, we live in a separated dorm facility and are transported by VOS vehicles and drivers.

    The magic of experiential education
    Lydia's Mom (Parent)

A 5-day ski trip could change my child in a positive way! The experiential education not only allowed him to get the fun of learning during various activities but also inspired him to take initiative to learn the abilities and knowledge that he wanted. The instructors always encouraged my son to face and solve problems during the program, facilitating him to learn and rethink from their experience. I believe that is why my child could grow up every day with joy. ... Read More

An unforgettable experience that changed my life
    Lucy (Camper)

Joining this camp made me realize to be grateful for my surrounding. It made me experience camping and make me have opinions on things that we have like warmth and food. I also made friends with people I would not normally talk to, creating inside jokes and stranger relationships. Going away to these camps has made me more vocal and accepting of trying new things and new foods. I was able to take all the positive tools and strategies that I learned at camp and bring them back to school and be more successful ... Read More

My physical and emotional limits grew each day
    Jason (Camper)

“The mind is the limit. As long as the mind can envision the fact that you can do something. You can do it, as long as you believe 100 percent.” - Arnold Schwarzenegger Throughout the camp, my physical and emotional limits grew each day. As my limits grew, I also expanded my comfort level. I became a lot more natural and less nervous in different scenarios. Looking back at the Arnold quote now, I can see what he meant when he said, “As long as you can envision the fact that you can do something you can do it.” Throughout the trek, I learned that if you want to achieve something, you can do it as long as you have the vision and the resilience to push through to achieve your goal. Throughout this trip I learned to not always focus on the bad things and magnify them. Sometimes things go sideways and you can do nothing about it, but you can always push through and see the bright side of the problem ... Read More

  • What's New

    Director's Message

    Robert Greer, Director
20 years experience of national director level at Outward Bound, in Canada, the USA and Hong Kong

I would like to share with families that though I have dedicated my professional career to outdoor and experiential education, my mission and interests go well beyond simply teaching fun activities in outdoor wilderness environments.  My main passion is to learn, and help others to learn, about the discovery of the “Self.”

    1. “Who am I,?
    2. “What am I?”
    3. “What am I capable of?”
    4. “What do I want and who do I want to be.”

These ancient universal questions educators, families and cultures have been struggling to answer and teach youth from before recorded history. After having facilitated over a million outdoor field teaching hours with tens of thousands of youth, I have concluded that the answers to these important character-defining universal questions are best learned while participating in outdoor education programs.

The unique challenges, risks and unknown outcome of experiences found in outdoor learning provides youth with the fastest and most powerful path to personal growth changes. This growth ignites young people’s interest and motivation to become successful mature creative thinkers and engaged responsible citizens. This ignition leads youth to master the four key life skills of social intelligence, self-awareness, communication and cooperation.

The exploration and mastery of these four key life skills is the main activity and objective of the Vancouver Outdoor Society outdoor education programs. These key skills also are the essence of all experiential (learning by doing) education in the outdoors.

    • About Vancouver Outdoors Society

Why do families and their children need outdoor education?

Over the past ten years, the Vancouver Outdoors Society has strived to answer this question through dialogue with families before, during, and after our programs. We found that participants want more than just a fun activity but a meaningful experience that facilitates personal growth. Parents look for a reliable educational partner that can assist them in guiding their children from childhood into their adult years and nurture positive relationships between them.

To respond to the desires of families and participants, we have designed a wide variety of outdoor activities that incorporate Vancouver Outdoors Society’s Big five character traits (honesty, leadership, trust, courage, patience) into the program, helping participants discover and develop themselves through challenges and outdoor adventures. We also work closely with parents to leverage program experiences to positively influence their children’s lives.

The Vancouver Outdoors Society’s outdoor adventure, cultural exploration, and educational philosophy offer youth a chance to learn beyond just how to have fun outdoors and the skills needed to live and travel in the wilderness. We aim to build participants’ characters and create resilient leaders for the future. Your beyond adventure starts here!
