American History CHA3U (Grade 11)
The United States appears to be in a period of major transformation, but not for the first time. In the media, there have been ongoing reflections about the meaning of everything from the Civil War 150 years ago to the legacy of race that runs throughout America's past. There have also been questions about how American society is constructed. Are we in another age of Robber Baron capitalism? How can we understand the importance of the 2016 election? How and why does the culture of the United States mean so much around the world? Why is this country (our closest and most important ally) both admired and despised around the world? How did the United States come to be what it is today? What triumphs and tragedies has it endured in its history? These questions and more will be explored as you encounter key trends, personalities, icons and events from America's past. Evaluations and projects may include a research essay about a topic in Black American history or a review of an important American film.
