    Canadian Mathematical Society answered our questions

    Who are you as an organization?

    The Canadian Mathematical Society has been offering camps and competitions across Canada for decades. This camp curriculum was exclusively created by the Canadian Mathematical Society, and local teachers. This camp is open for anyone who wishes to attend! The overall concepts covered in each class will be: number sense, algebra, data management, geometry and measurement. There will be 3 groups available. No student is stuck in one class. The purpose of these classes is to have fluidity depending on the concepts covered and the student’s strengths. Competitions are an important part of learning mathematics and a fun activity for students of all ages. The CMS runs three math competitions and incorporates them into our camp programs.

    What do you do differently or uniquely well?

    "The Canadian Mathematical Society is committed to mathematics education in Canada.

    Each summer, CMS math camp provides students with an interest in mathematics a unique and unforgettable experience. Students who attend the camps leave with new friends, new ideas, and a new outlook on mathematics.

    Competitions are an important part of learning mathematics and a fun activity for students of all ages. The CMS supports math competitions by running our own competitions to funding regional competitions to supporting Canadian involvement in international competitions. We also provide a wide variety of resources for students to prepare for competitions. "

    Who are your staff and counsellors?

    "All staff at the math camp are passionate about mathematics and bringing that passion to students. Many educators /counselors are math teachers/educators, math graduate students, or post-doctoral math students. "

    What do families need to know about registration?

    "It's easy to sign up for math camp! Simply click on the Registration link on our page to register. We have limited space in each group and will provide a sold-out message once we hit capacity.

    Refund Policy: You may cancel your registration up to three (3) weeks before the start of your camp week. There is a $50 fee for cancellations. No refunds will be issued for cancellations after the three-week cut-off. Refunds will be issued in the event that the Canadian Mathematical Society has to cancel a camp."

    The Our Kids review of Canadian Mathematical Society

    our take

    Known for its engaging summer camps and math competitions, the Canadian Mathematical Society (CMS) offers meticulously designed programs, which are comprehensive and enjoyable educational experience. The CMS Summer Math Camp, hosted at Carleton University, features a curriculum covering number sense, algebra, data management, geometry, and measurement, divided into three tailored classes: 'Math for the Fun of It' for ages 6-11, focusing on interactive and playful learning; 'Math for the Next Level' for ages 10 and up, aimed at deepening understanding and preparing for future academic challenges; and 'Shooting for the Stars' for ages 12 and up, offering advanced problem-solving and conceptual connections. In addition to the camp, CMS runs the Canada Jay Mathematical Competition (CJMC), a stimulating challenge for students in grades K-8, featuring 15 multiple-choice questions that enhance problem-solving skills and complement the school curriculum. Under the guidance of Termeh Kousha, Executive Director and University of Ottawa professor, CMS's programs ignite a passion for mathematics, promoting critical thinking and problem-solving abilities, and encouraging students to explore potential STEM careers. By making math both accessible and enjoyable, CMS aims to bridge the educational gap, providing a valuable and enriching experience for all participants.

    Director's Message

    Termeh Kousha, Executive Director, Canadian Mathematical Society
    PhD

    My name is Termeh Kousha, and I am the Executive Director of the Canadian Mathematical Society(CMS). I got my PhD in Mathematics in 2011 from the University of Ottawa. I am also a professor in the math department at the University of Ottawa. I have taught different courses including linear algebra, calculus, statistics, regression, and probability.

    Last summer the CMS ran its first open day-camp for students in Ottawa, marking a departure from our traditional invitation-only approach. By opening the registration process, we sought to provide more opportunities for children to engage with and develop a love for mathematics.

    With a focus on exciting mathematical challenges, the camp was designed and led by local teachers. The camp content featured several activities including:

    • Building tangrams;
    • Creating various geometric shapes;
    • Creating tessellations;
    • Pentominoes;
    • Solving and creating mixed codes, Pigpen and Vigenère ciphers;
    • Competition Equations; and
    • Escape rooms.

    The success of the first year's pilot led to the development of a more comprehensive curriculum for the 2024 camp.

    The CMS is excited about this year’s camp and hopes that we can provide an opportunity for students to see math for the fun and exciting subject it is.

    Mathematics has been a difficult subject for some students. However, the CMS believes that by providing a fun and engaging environment, students can learn to enjoy math and realize its importance in everyday life.

    During this year’s camp, we plan to introduce students to interesting and challenging math problems that will help to develop their critical thinking and problem-solving skills. We will also be incorporating games and interactive activities that will make learning math more enjoyable.

    Our aim is to foster a love for math and inspire students to pursue careers in STEM fields. We believe that by making math more accessible and enjoyable, we can help to bridge the gap that often exists between students and math.

    We look forward to welcoming students to this year’s camp and hope that they will leave with a newfound appreciation for the beauty and excitement of mathematics.
