The Claremont Nature Centre was founded in 1970, and the main building is, delightfully, a lovingly maintained panabode structure, an example of the architecture of so many camps developed mid-century. Love that, and love the programs too. The camps are opportunities for kids to get outdoors, into nature, and they do it within 160 acres of variable green space. So much of the value of the experience is the experience itself—just getting out there within it, and having a first-hand, expert introduction to all the biology, fun, and adventure of the natural world. The centre is dedicated to stewardship, though they approach it first through joyful engagement. The location, of course, couldn’t be better. Kids experience the natural world through the eyes of expert staff and interpreters, all relatively close to home. Meals and extended care options make it easy for working parents to manage.

Hello!
Here at the Claremont Nature Centre we strive to provide your child with fun and experiential activities that help to develop a sense of wonder, foster a deeper connection with the natural world and make learning fun!
The Claremont Nature Centre is located on 399 acres of beautiful green space in the Durham region. Campers spend the summer exploring the forests, meadows and streams on the Claremont property.
Claremont Nature Centre camps are child-centred and led by our team of experienced outdoor educators. Our camps focus on the individual while helping develop a deep connection with nature and prioritizing skill-based learning. With the support of our experienced camp counselors, campers will learn how to build shelters and fires, practice their identification skills and search for wild edibles in the forest among many other activities.
We offer a variety of camps throughout the year including day and overnight camps during the summer, March Break and Winter Holiday camps and an 17 day Archaeology course in August where high school students can take part in an archaeological dig and gain two credits along the way!
Come check out what we have to offer!

“I loved the course, all of the nature studies were wonderful and the ceremonies I got to participate in where simply beautiful. I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to participate in such things again, I feel very fortunate for all the opportunities. The community sense is just fantastic, I feel like I’ve known some of these people forever, yet it’s been three weeks. It usually takes me that long to learn everyone’s name. I have definitely some friends for life. The instructors are fantastically friendly and caring; they really seem to like us better than ‘regular’ teachers do. Thank you so much!
“This was definitely not what I was expecting. I learned a lot in a short amount of time and made lots of lasting friendships…There is not one thing in the brochure, that I remember reading, that says how awesome and amazing this course is! There is one thing I can say that everyone that has taken this course will agree upon. There is no way to express how this course has changed us and how it affected us until you try it out yourself.”
"During the summer before entering university, I was lucky enough to attend the Boyd Archaeological Field School with the help of the Carr-Reid Bursary. I am now a third-year student at U of T, majoring in Statistics and Anthropology. The way I approach school has been greatly shaped by experiences like the one I had at the Boyd Archaeological Field School. My time at the school was a challenging, immersive, and important experience. Being able to truly immerse oneself in academia is rare and underappreciated at the high school level, even though it is such a vital period for many soon-to-graduate students. I strongly believe that it is experiences, not books, that truly inspire and touch the lives of students. Whether students follow the path of archaeology or not, this field school teaches students how to look at the world outside of one’s own limited worldview. It is through this field school that I’ve developed a great interest in past cultures and awareness of the indigenous people of North America. The field school is more than a summer camp; it is a place where students can expand their interests into meaningful experiences. Without the bursary, I would not have been able to participate in this program. I hope that many more students can be given the same opportunity to appreciate anthropology in this important and unforgettable way."
"We love that the kids are outside all day playing and hiking. The counselors are very welcoming, inclusive and friendly"
"My kids favorite part was getting dirty an playing outside all day long! Both girls said "best camp ever!" We loved seeing pictures updates throughout the week. They loved using the pictures to tell stories about their day."
"My kids loved the river walk, getting their hands dirty, experiencing new adventures. They told me they caught crayfish!? Wow! They loved Tie Dye! I don't stop hearing about how much fun they had!"
