Who are you as an organization?
Join us for space-themed STEM camps and workshops through digital learning. Some activities may require the need for common household items available in your pantry and others have 'boxes' delivered to home. We will work with what’s available at home, minimizing the need to head outside for supplies! As we move towards hybrid programming, we will offer few programs in person around various locations in the Greater Toronto Area. We have a range of topics we cover including coding the Moon, Mars rover design, sending messages to the International Space Station, mission design, observing Earth from Space, satellite design, and much more! Our themes cover astronomy, geology, geography, engineering and several other STEM areas.
What do you do differently or uniquely well?
"Our programs and content are specially curated with an eye to bring these exciting topics to the forefront using simple engaging methods. It may involve using crafty items, exploring that creative skill, or pondering on questions that make us wonder how space is so vast. With every aspect of planning and facilitating, we ensure we incorporate real life examples and showcase people who actively contribute to the sector locally and internationally. Explore our Youtube channel to see who all we have featured or invited as part of our virtual speaker series. "
Who are your staff and counsellors?
"Our organization is founded by a planetary scientist and identifies as a South Asian female professional. Dr. Bhairavi Shankar has over 15 years of working with the general public, facilitating and organizing outreach events. Her passion around the space sector and in engaging youth of all ages from underrepresented communities continues on as she leads the activities at Indus Space. Together with a core team with STEM and science communication skills, our staff at Indus Space ensures each learning experience is exciting and engaging. "
What do families need to know about registration?
"Programs are listed on our company website. For enquiries or clarifications on our programs, please email us at [email protected] and include Our Kids Camp in the subject line. "
In response to current public health guidelines around large group gatherings, we have decided to run virtual programs until the end of calendar year 2021. All our programs will be hosted live on Zoom. Workshop and camp participants may also need to use Google Classroom.

Dr. Bhairavi Shankar, Founder
Ph.D.
Welcome! I am a Space Scientist, an independent research scientist and founder of Indus Space based in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) and offering virtual learning to kids and teens nationwide.
I work in a field that combines both space science, geography, and geological analyses. In particular, I use a combination of spatial (location based) and spectral (light interaction) data collected from satellite missions to determine the geological history of planetary surfaces. This analysis is possible using remote sensing and cartographic GIS techniques. Previously, my research topics have focused on characterizing the morphologies of impact craters on several planetary bodies (Earth, Moon, Venus) using data fusion techniques.
Beyond research, I love to communicate the marvels of space science with the general public through outreach and education initiatives. As a GIS user, I am constantly exploring different ways to incorporate GIS tools and visualization techniques to share it with GIS users and learners!
As a woman in the Space/STEM fields, and of South Asian background, I value opportunities to promote the role of all women in STEM and to inspire future generations to join the STEM community. I am chairperson of Lotus STEMM, and serve on the council for the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada - Toronto Centre.
Please connect with me to discuss programming options. I'd love to speak with you.
