Transcript of the interview

How did you know this was the right fit?

One thing I really liked about it was the fact that there's three different levels for different age groups. So I just love medical stuff, and when I talked to my kids about the program, they were super excited about it to learn about their bodies. For my kids, that was perfect because I could do one drop off, one pickup, they're all together at the same camp, whereas normally other camps don't do that. So I love the fact that there was this wide range of age groups so that it's one pickup, one drop off, and they're all together.

What’s unique about the camp?

I love all the activities that they plan, and everything is related to the body. For example, my eldest got to do surgery on a banana. My youngest put on this little helmet about the brain and learned about the different parts of the brain, what it controls and what it does. My middle one got to put on crutches and try them out for the first time. It's just really cool stuff about the body that they get to learn and experience.

Was there any personal growth you saw in your child?

They were so excited about the body and had more questions coming home about what they learned. They obviously shared what they learned, but they had more questions about it, too. We have some kid anatomy books at home, and they would go home and read about it. My middle one is in grade five, and when they were learning about bones at school, she was so excited because she was the only one in her class who already knew the different parts. She was really excited to share things like that.

How can a parent support their child to get the most out of this experience?

Just ask them how their day was and ask them questions about what they learned. When you pick them up, they're going to start telling you about everything they've done and all the cool things they've learned about their body. They'll be so happy to share everything they've learned. And if they have any further questions, you can look them up together.

What would you tell other parents about the overall value of sending kids here?

Kids naturally love learning about their bodies, and that's what they get to do here. There are so many cool experiences and experiments that they get to do that normally they don't have the opportunity to do. For example, my daughter was in grade six going into grade seven, and she got to dissect organs, something they normally don't get to do in a regular school setting. They offer before and after care, and I love the fact that there are the three age groups where I can send all my kids to one place. They have so many staff and volunteers available there that I knew my kids were really well taken care of. I felt that my kids were very safe and in good hands, and they just had a really good experience there.

What does your child say about their experience?

They loved it, and they want to go back every year. We signed them up again this year and every year we invite more friends to join them. As they talk to other friends about different camps, their parents are always interested as well. They love all the activities and all the experiments, and they look forward to it every year.

Is there anything you'd like to add?

I wish I had something like this when I was little because it's just so fun. They're so excited to talk about it and share everything they did all day. I just love camps like this, where it's STEM-oriented and medical-oriented. I'm just so happy that my kids get to experience this.
