YMCA of the National Capital Region, Nicole Binnington & Randi Penney, Camp Otonabee Coordinator & Neighbourhood Day Camps Coordinator
    Hello Campers, Families & Community!
I am so excited for summer at YMCA Camp Otonabee! I can’t wait to see our site full of campers making new friends, stepping outside of their comfort zones and achieving things they didn’t know they could do.
YMCA Camp Otonabee is open to all campers aged 4-11, with our leadership development programs available for youth up to age 16. We offer both day and overnight camping experiences, including specialized programs like French, Drama, and Adventure Camp. Our camp features a wide variety of outdoor programming including canoeing, rock climbing, orienteering and so much more. There is something for every camper!
Having grown up going to summer camp, I can attest that camp magic is real! At every moment, whether it be during a program or in a simple walk to lunch, campers are learning about themselves and the community around them. I believe the skills developed here follow our campers throughout the year- empowering them at school, at home and everywhere in between.
We hope you choose to join us for a magical summer!
    In Camping Friendship,
    Nicole Binnington

Hello my name is Randi Penney and I am our Neighbourhood Day Camps Coordinator!
I have run municipal and city camps across Nova Scotia and Ottawa since 2019 and have been working for the YMCA since I graduated in May 2024, previously in our Newcomer Youth leadership Development Program!
I am passionate about what we do at the YMCA and in our Neighbourhood Day Camps because I love that everyone is welcome, we care about making community, camps and leadership more accessible to children and families in the city. We help kids develop leadership skills and encourage an interest in recreation through sports, games, crafting and more. There is nothing like seeing the difference one week can make in a child’s confidence – in just one week, you see friendships blossom, children trying new things, a quiet leader find their voice and children actively seeking opportunities to step up or help out. I love hearing kids have bonded with our amazing staff and can not wait to come back again.
YMCA camps create a community from a child’s first summer to when they become leaders in training to when they are running our camps! Many of our staff have grown up attending YMCA camps in the same community they now work in. I know first hand that our camps help instill a sense of belonging and meaning in our campers and staff.
Our camps include 6 locations across the city of Ottawa and Clarence Rockland area – Campers ages 4-12 have the opportunity to learn new skills and have fun in local outdoor spaces, gymnasiums, swimming pools and activity rooms, as well as enjoy themed weeks and out trips. Y Neighbourhood Summer Day Camps are a great way to spend summer days having fun and creating friendships!
    In Camping Friendship,
    Randi Penney

    Stories

    • Kelly & Wilder

Every time Kelly drove by Camp Otonabee on her way to work, it stood out to her as a classic summer camp. She always wanted to be able to give her 6-year-old son, Wilder, the experience of going to a camp like that, but as a single mom supporting two children with disabilities, it seemed out of the question.

In 2023, her hopes were made possible when she was offered financial support through the Evelyne E. Laishley Campership Fund. Receiving this annual sponsorship fund meant that Wilder had the opportunity to attend a day program at Camp Otonabee. “To let him have that typical summer experience, that he can go back to school with and relate to others … I just think it’s so important,” Kelly shared.

Wilder is an active kid. He loves building with LEGO and being outside. He also has a limb difference and wears a prosthetic. For Kelly, having a son with a disability means that acceptance and accommodation are necessary in new environments. “It is a large requirement when Wilder will be attending somewhere that I’m not going to be present.” Camp Director, Marisa, alongside Assistant Director, Hannah, met with Kelly and Wilder in advance to discuss how to best support him at camp. They talked about when he should be wearing his prosthetic, appropriate language to use, and how potential comments from other children would be handled.

Kelly believed that Camp Otonabee would bea great fit for Wilder, and she was proven right. Wilder made friends and participated in activities like canoeing, swimming and nature walks. He was particularly proud of facing his fears on the high
rope course. “The first time I did it, I was scared,” said Wilder. “The second time, I wanted to go to
the top … It was fun!”

Kelly saw that Wilder was excited to wake up every morning and return to camp for more adventures. “I could see his confidence was growing in himself and in his social relationships.”

Wilder will have the opportunity to come back to Camp Otonabee for a second year. He and Kelly are both looking forward to it. “We’re so grateful for the support for Wilder. It doesn’t just make a difference in his life, it also makes a difference in mine.”
