These types of schools are ideal for students who wish to develop and expand their vocabulary, reading and writing skills in another language while in an environment where that second language is predominate and reinforces everything they are continuously learning. By the time students graduate, they are very close to if not spot on in fluency of the language.

Benefits of your child attending a language high school

Suzanne Majhanovich, a professor of education at the University of Western Ontario, advises that learning a second language can actually help with a child’s native language and that the younger a student learns the language the easier it is for them to pick up.

Not only do students also focus better and excel academically but becoming fluent in another language, such as FrenchGerman, or Mandarin, provides children with the chance to learn about different cultures and become more globally aware, increasing job opportunities at home and abroad.

Types of language high schools available

Many private language high schools have day programs but also offer boarding as an option for students who wish to stay on campus and fully immerse themselves in school life. Aside from a bilingual program, many also offer exchange programs and university counseling, tutoring, career planning and IB diploma programs.

Their courses range anywhere from a specialization in a certain area like arts or sports, or cover a broad range of academic and social clubs such as robotics, environmental studies, debate or community service, as well as moral development and leadership.

Costs of a private language school

Private language high schools generally have a number of options to help families pay for fees, including financial aid, scholarships, sibling discounts, and bursaries. Learn more about how to cover the cost of tuition with these 18 Tips to Pay for Private School.

Choosing the right language high school for your child

How do you know if the language school you’re looking into is the right fit for your child? It depends on your child and their strengths and weaknesses, says Susan Markle, Director of Admissions at Toronto French School. Some students may struggle to pick up the language while others have a natural knack for it. Researching the school and its programs and meeting with the staff during private tours or Open Houses is an excellent way to explore how your child may excel in their language program as well as how they can flourish in the school’s environment overall.
