    • Letting Go at the Camp Gate: Why it's Okay if Your Child Doesn't Eat Broccoli This week
It was Sunday afternoon check-in, and camp was buzzing—Campers backpacks tumbled out of trunks and parents offered last-minute instructions like air traffic controllers as though their kids were flying internationally instead of spending a week at summer camp.
      “Don’t forget to brush.”
      “Don’t lose that hat.”
“Be kind. Even to your sister.”
A grey minivan pulled up, doors fly open. Out jumps a lanky 10-year-old with a crooked grin, socked feet in sandals, and a ballcap worn backwards. His mom climbs out a beat behind him, already clutching a fistful of notes—laminated.
“I just—could I talk to his cabin leader?” she asked, eyes scanning for a purple staff shirt.
Sunshine, a wiry 18-year-old whose name matched his attitude, jogs over.
“Hey! I’m Sunshine. You must be Jaxon.”
      The boy grinned. “That’s me.”
“Awesome. You’re in Sky Pilot—the best cabin. Obviously.”
Jaxon peels off to high-five a fellow camper, and his mom turns to Sunshine, her voice dropping.
“So, it’s just… the food. He’s picky. Like, really picky. He won’t eat things that touch. He says he’s allergic to mushrooms—he’s not—it’s more of a moral stance.”
Sunshine nods, that same solemn head-tilt staff reserve for thunder warnings.
“I totally get it,” he says. “Honestly, camp food’s decent. Lots of options. But also—he’ll eat if he’s hungry. We run ‘em hard out here.”
      She laughs nervously. Pauses. Blinks.
“I know, I know. I just… he’s never been away this long before.”
And then Sunshine, who had only recently learned to do his laundry, looks her straight in the eye and says:
“We’ll take good care of him. Promise.”
      And he meant it.

      What You’re Really Dropping Off
When parents pull up to IAWAH, they’re not just dropping off bug spray and sleeping bags. They’re handing over something heavier: trust.
They’re trusting a group of barely-older teens to watch over their child. To protect them, yes—but also to challenge them, guide them, grow them. To help them stretch into themselves.
The parents are stepping back so their child can step forward.

      Formation in Disguise
Camp is full of sneaky lessons—formation wrapped in fun.
Cabin leaders like Sunshine aren’t babysitters in bucket hats. They’re the big siblings your kid didn’t know they needed. They teach kids how to sweep a cabin floor and sweep aside fears. They cheer at the top of their lungs when someone passes their swim test. They quietly remember to serve the pasta with the sauce on the side.
They walk with kids through homesickness and beachside chats. They model grace and grit. They pray in quiet moments and loud ones. They’re not perfect—but they care.

The Tough Work of Letting Go
At IAWAH, we believe the gospel shows up in the ordinary. In mismatched socks and mosquito bites. In cabin cleanup and whispered prayers.
And sometimes, the toughest thing a parent can do is… let go.
To wave from the gravel lot, wipe your eyes behind your sunglasses, and drive away trusting that the same God who walks with your child at home is walking with them here—through the laughter, the homesick moments, and yes… even through mushrooms.
    • Our child loved camp

"It was our first time sending the kids to a sleep away camp. They were apprehensive before going but now they can't stop talking about it. They found the right balance of activities, instruction, free time, and fun. They loved the food and the best is that they are more open to talk about their faith and values."
