Bernadette White, Welcome
The year 2020 started out as a challenging one for most individuals and families. At the time of planning for Three R’s numeracy and literacy camp, it was supposed to only run for the summer. This was planned as a pilot program for a potential future running of a Homework Club. The COVID 19 pandemic has created a lot of changes, distortion, disorientation and imbalance; not just nationally but also globally.
This initiative for the start of this program was not due to the pandemic. This was a plan from my experience in the last few years. I have worked in the Halton school board for over six years and had the opportunity to work alongside some of the children both in the special education program and in the general classroom settings. I am a Licensed Practical Nurse and also have to aptitude to not only tutor the elementary level children but also to assess the areas of academic needs. Our program goes beyond the classroom curriculum. We follow the curriculum with extra knowledge and skills that will definitely become useful in the future. I recall my first year of nursing, as one of the requirements were to write a Math test before we are allowed to administer medication. We were not allowed to use calculators. My long multiplication and long division skills came in very handy. Therefore here at Three R’s, though we have calculators and tablets to do quick computation, we also teach to do manually. We welcome you to come see and talk about what we do differently that may enhance your child’s academic skills.
I wrote a part of this letter at the end of March 2020, when there is was no way of knowing, even at the governmental level, what the future holds on a social, economical and personal level. It was hard for families to even plan for future events for their children as there was no knowledge of if and when they will return to school for the rest of the school year. It was not by choice but a mandate for students to remain out of academic institutions until deemed otherwise. To that end, I have considered extending the camp programs to include after school and weekend sessions. We would like to offer some assurance and extra support to any struggles or gaps the pandemic may have posed for many, and hopefully also provide some resolution.
