OUR KIDS review of Kettleby Valley Camp

It’s a truism, but worth repeating, that at camp there is more than meets the eye, and Kettleby is a great example of that. It’s a traditional camp, with all the traditional activities, from canoeing, to swimming, to hiking, to arts and crafts. There are some updates, too, including paintball. But, as director Peter Truman says, “all the activities really are a medium for us to help kids understand that trying new things isn’t a big deal.” And with that comes a lot of social, emotional, and physical growth and development, something that the Kettleby program actively brings to the fore. There has been a camp on this site since the late 1950s. The cities to the south have grown, and it’s not as far from the urban environment as it once was, though that brings a nice plus as well: it’s close to home, something that both parents and campers appreciate.

    Director's Message

Kettleby Valley Camp, Grace McGowan, Camp Director
2023 saw the return of many popular traditions at KVC. First, we reestablished our Arts and Crafts program which for 2021 and 2022 was lead by our counsellors to maintain cohorts and keep campers outside as much as possible. This limited the scope of the activity and although our counsellors did their best, not everyone has the same level of skills when it comes to crafts. This program, led by Skip (2023), Pesto (2024) and Bingo (2025), had a new home where campers had access to more supplies and the projects that we were able to offer was expanded and more elaborate. Our day camp program also saw the return of large gatherings. Each day began and ended at the Notch, with all 240 campers. This allowed us to create a greater sense of community, deliver a consistent message to everyone, and recognize achievements such as getting a bullseye at archery in front of the entire camp. We also gathered together every Friday afternoon for our Awards Campfire. Groups were awarded activity buttons that they earned throughout the week. 5-Year Camper Paddles were presented, and the winners of our bus competition were announced.

We continue to offer our ever popular Open House as we recognize that there are families who have been sending their campers to Kettleby Valley for several years and never the opportunity to see the camp. Parents and campers are able to see the cabins where campers sleep, take part in some of our camp activities and appreciate the wonderful property that helps make our camp special. I hope you’re as excited as we are about this summer, and I hope to see you at our 2026 Open House on June 13th.

    Staff and Counsellors

Each year, we assemble a unique team to work at KVC. Here are a few qualities that we look for in all of our staff, no matter the position:
1 - they must know the importance of making everyone feel welcome at camp.
2 - they must be here at camp to contribute to their camper’s experience wherever they can. They all understand that their social needs are secondary to those of our campers.
3 - they must understand the link between the demands of the job and achieving the rewards. Working at camp has its challenges, but there are few jobs that come with the satisfaction we receive through helping campers grow during their time at KVC. If we want to feel fulfilled with our working experience, we must all be willing to put in the work.
