We are in Wharton Global High School Investment Competition!

Investments, portfolios, and capital, oh my! These are just some examples of the jargon that gets regularly tossed around during the Young Entrepreneur’s Wharton High School Investment Competition meetings. Through these meetings, which are held nightly and often last more than an hour, students get to experience what it would be like to be the portfolio manager utilizing their newly-learned skills in risk, diversification, company and industry analysis, and many other important aspects of investing. The Wharton Global High School Investment Competition is an international investment simulation open to high school students and their mentors. This is the first year FocusOnline’s Young Entrepreneurs have been entered into this prestigious competition, and all involved are as assiduous as they are excited.

Mr. James Moon, a Senior Investment Advisor, has been mentoring three teams of high school students since the start of the competition in September. The Wharton Global High School Investment Competition drives more than 5000+ students to participate annually as students engage in building a portfolio that meets the specific needs of its client, from the incipient planning stages to execution using WInS (the Wharton Investment Simulator), a web-based stock market simulation. The competition is around the halfway mark, as students just finished preparing their mid-term reports, which included an analysis of their business strategies so far. But the hard work is far from over; students are now preparing for their 10-page final report, including portfolio breakdowns, strategy summaries, and specific reporting to convince the judges that their strategies and investment choices best suit the needs of their client. Mr. Moon is confident that, because of the creativity and ingenuity of his students, they will do very well throughout this competition.

Although there is still a long way to go in terms of the competition, these students understand the value of the journey and gaining real-world experience. Young Entrepreneur student, Steven Zhang, refers to the knowledge he’s gained as information “that an actual entrepreneur wants to [learn]; not just a lot of definition and facts,” and the tools and strategies he’s learned as influencing his “critical thinking inside the realm of business.”  Kobe Li, another YE Student, says he really enjoys “that we analyze different things around the world, real life problems, from a business perspective.”  Mr. Moon refers to what he teaches the students as not your everyday business course, but as life and career modeling that will surely save students time and money in the long run. To hear more about what our YE students have to say, check out this video.

Here at FocusOnline, we wish Mr. Moon and his students all the best on their investment journey! We’re rooting for you, and we know that, no matter what, the true “success is a journey, not a destination.”
