At Laurus Summer Camp there is nothing we enjoy more than teaching our campers about giving back to our community. As proud members of the Montreal community we understand that there is a need for the further implementation of active citizenship among our youth. Often times we think globally without considering the local concerns as well. Therefore, Laurus Summer Camp has implemented the #KidsCan program which is geared at doing exactly that: teaching our youth about the importance of giving back to their community and being active citizens.
For the last four summers we have donated to the SPCA, the Alzeihmer's Society of Montreal, The Vivo Fund, and the Bell Fund. In 2016 our campers organized a bake sale and carnival day with special prizes and raffles that parents could participate in as well. Thanks to our parents, campers, and community we were able to raise $3000 dollars for the Bell Fund. The Bell Fund was founded by Judy Martin in 2015, a cancer survivor who wanted to find a way to celebrate the end of her treatment, so she installed a bell which is rung every time a patient ends their treatment. It signifies strength and hope for the patients and their families. On top of all that, she provides Comfort Kits that are given to every cancer patient in the MUHC - the kit includes a blanket, water bottle, mints, and many more items that patients undergoing treatment would require. They also provide a comfort blanket to every child on Sarah's Floor of the MUHC.
Another amazing aspect of the Comfort Kits is a letter written by kids of Montreal - Laurus Summer Camp had the honor of participating in letter making for the Comfort Kits. It is incredibly important to teach our youth that there is more to supporting your community then donating to fundraisers, being compassionate and caring and providing emotional support for our community is just as important, arguable, more important.
Laurus Summer Camp is proud to have been part of such an amazing initiative and watching our campers mature, learn, and be caring members of society is absolutely priceless.
