  • Summary

Sparrow Lake Camp answered our questions

Who are you as an organization?

Since 1912, Sparrow Lake Camp has been giving kids (and families) the chance to experience community, adventure, and fun in the great outdoors. Located 90 minutes from Toronto on a hundred-acre wooded peninsula, our camp is ideal for activities like kayaking, swimming, canoeing, sailing, sports, tripping, arts, crafts, and ropes. 1 & 2-Week Programs, Leadership, & Family Camp.

    • Special needs: Yes, mild support.
A few of our campers have special needs.
    • LGBTQ+ friendly community

What do you do differently or uniquely well?

"Sparrow Lake Camp is a smaller camp with up to 150 campers at a time. This offers a family-like atmosphere while still being large enough for kids to meet plenty of new friends their own age. Our daily schedule gives time for campers to do activities with their cabin-mates in the mornings, and choose their own activities in the afternoons. The evenings are filled with camp-wide activities like dances, capture the flag, socials, campfires, talent shows, and more.

In addition to an activity-packed day, our program also features a daily evening reflection and sign-song called 'Vesper' which takes place each day after dinner. This 10-15 minute period offers a non-religious reflection on a theme which is planned with the help of campers."

Who are your staff and counsellors?

"Our staff come from a wide background and even include a number of members from overseas each summer. With 1-3 counsellors assigned to each cabin of 10 kids, depending on age, and an overall staff:camper ratio of 3:1, kids receive the support and encouragement they need to enjoy a sense of belonging and enjoy a wide range of fun and engaging activities.

Many of our staff return to camp year after year, and receive 1-2 weeks of training at the beginning of the summer, followed up by ongoing in-service training and support throughout the season. All staff are qualified in first aid, and a full-time nurse lives on site. "

What do families need to know about registration?

"Our registration opens at the start of November each year, and we are on call to respond to your questions during the week. We also host monthly webinars which provide a 30-40 minute overview of the entire program, and an opportunity for parents to ask questions in a Q&A session. "
