Girls' high schools

Find a list of the top all-girls' high schools in Canada

What are girls' high schools and who are they for?

An all-girls high school is a type of private high school that specifically supports young women typically in Grades 9 to 12, ages 14 to 18. These schools focus on developing and encouraging girls’ individual interests and passions with a mixture of programs and courses available in a variety of areas that serve the unique learning styles of girls.

Benefits of your daughter attending an all-girls private secondary school
Single-sex secondary schools are ideal for teenage girls who wish to explore their interests in a safe atmosphere where they don’t need to feel self-conscious in ways that they may otherwise be around boys.

At this important time in development when young women are prone to moments of feeling awkward or uncertain, students at an all-girls school are surrounded by strong role models and supported by staff and peers as they continue to build confidence and figure out who they are. Read more

Types of private high schools for girls
Aside from day programs, many private all-girls high schools also offer boarding where girls live in residential facilities, attend extracurricular activities and receive additional support all on campus. Curriculums vary widely by school but many provide a range of humanities and social sciences, mathematics, natural sciences, sports, arts, languages, and social and academic clubs as well as AP or IB programs.

Before and after school tutoring may also be provided along with learning study assistance, career planning services, university counseling and exchange programs among a selection of additional benefits.

Costs of girls' secondary schools
The cost of an all-girls high school will vary depending on a few different factors, including the location and type. Some have tuition fees starting around $5,000 while others vary between $28,000 and $50,000 or higher based on their services, particularly boarding.

However, there are a variety of ways to pay for girls secondary schools, such as scholarships, bursaries and finding financial aid. Learn more about resources that can help you afford this type of school with these 18 tips to pay for private school.

Choosing a high school for your daughter
With so many of school options available for your daughter, it may seem daunting to narrow down a list.

Think about your daughter’s needs first and foremost and get advice from an educational consultant if you feel it will be helpful in determining her individual needs and interests. An advisor can also explain how a certain types of high schools might benefit your child.

Research schools based on those factors that are important to your family and involve your daughter in the process. Check school profiles, visit their websites and attend annual school fairs like the Our Kids Private School Expos, then plan to visit the school for a private tour or during their open houses. Suggest that your daughter join you if possible to get a feel for the atmosphere and consider bringing some questions to ask school officials, current students and even the parents of current students.  Develop a shortlist of a few schools your family is interested in from your findings.

Applying to a girls' high school
Be aware that application deadlines at schools will vary and confirm those dates with the school as well as their application fees. Schools will often ask for copies of printed documents such as transcripts and report cards, among other necessary forms, and your daughter may also be required to take an entrance test or SSAT.  Read more about the application process and what you need to know in Applying to Schools.
