At Ponacka, boys age 10 and older attend camp for a four week session. Boys ages 7-9 years old as of July 1st, 2021 have the option of attending either for two or four weeks.
Why four weeks?
The longer stay is required for developing personal growth, self confidence and self reliance. Lasting friendships are forged over the four weeks together, enhanced by the group's canoe trip, led by their two counsellors. The youngest month campers go out on an overnight canoe trip on Lake Baptiste and the older boys go out for up to 7 days in Algonquin Park or Temagami. A month provides enough time for mastery of skills, including:
- Red Cross and Life Saving Society levels in swimming, ORCKA canoeing and CanSail sailing.
Boys have time to build skills without missing out on fun sports. Ponacka offers hockey, basketball and soccer leagues as well as other outdoor activities. Month long campers enjoy participating in the drama production, putting on a big show at the end of the month!
Learning how to ride a horse, catch a fish, shoot an arrow at archery, create a stained glass masterpiece, make a necklace at lapidary, get up on waterskis and conquer fear on the ropes course takes time and a boy has time in the four week session for all of that, plus more.
Our Counsellors in Training (CITs) are selected from the previous summer's 15 year old campers and then, if selected, go on to become counsellors the following summer. All of our counselling staff are former campers and CITs, and many are second generation or even third generation Ponackians.
In addition to their canoe trip, older campers can elect to participate in one of our Adventure programs. We offer scuba diving clinics and certification courses, white water canoeing, rock climbing on nearby rock walls and mountain biking in the Haliburton Forest Reserve.
