The Our Kids review of Willowdale School of Music

    our take

If music can change the world, Willowdale School of Music (WSM) is helping to lead that change. Offering more than just music lessons, WSM teaches the students the skills and provides the tools to make the world a better place. Started by Sarah Murley-Hauser, WSM has grown from in-home lessons to a multi-instrument music school. Murley-Hauser wanted to share her knowledge and love of music and how it can make you a better person. Lessons aren’t high-pressure, but rather engaging and enjoyable, so students want to keep going and feel confident in their abilities. Teaching staff look to inspire students and they customize lessons to each child’s learning style. Kids learn that failure and hard work are integral parts of success in music, and that neither are a bad thing. Trial lessons help kids decide if they want to continue on a musical journey, and help parents decide if WSM is a good fit.

Love the Willowdale School of Music! My daughter started virtual singing lessons last year and eagerly waits for classes. The teachers are not only friendly towards the children but also have a very wide and deep knowledge of Music, singing and instruments. My daughter is confident and joyful in her music lessons

If someone worry about which violin school is good one for their kids. Please just go taking a trial lesson at Willowdale School of Music first! My daughter has learned a violin less than 1 year in Japan, but she seemed to be very nervous and get wet with her hands, even the teacher was not strict. I just think some kids need learning it little by little. The school I could feel it is The Willowdale School of Music. Sara who is a violin teacher and director as well is amazing and grasp how to enjoy playing it with teaching skill. Now my daughter never get wet with her hands even she plays it in front of people. She seems to have some confident and joyful with music ... Show More

Our son loves his guitar lessons

As relative newcomers to Willowdale School of Music, we are so happy to have found you. Our 14 year-old son has been taking guitar lessons with Adrien and absolutely loves it. Adrien has such a positive personality and is so encouraging as a teacher. He also provides lesson plans for at-home practice and sends us progress reports which have been really helpful. Our son loves playing the guitar and practices willingly. Thanks to everyone at WSM, especially Adrien, for the fantastic experience ... Show More

    My children LOVE WSM

I cannot say enough good things about the Willowdale School of Music. We have been at this school for over a year now and both my children LOVE it. They are aged 7 and 9 years of age and are learning to play the piano and violin. They have also joined the summer camps here and will return again. There is a sense of family and community here at the school and the music curriculum and teachers are wonderful. There have been many opportunities for the children to showcase their emerging talents at concerts hosted by the school. The school has many incentives to keep the children motivated. The teachers have a beautiful way with my children and their needs. I was so impressed that I joined the school as an adult learner for singing lessons and have not been disappointed. I would highly recommend the Willowdale School of Music ... Show More

    Great progress with new students

We have been with WSM for 6 months now and as brand new students, the kids' progresses have been phenomenal! We started lessons with Ms.Lori who was amazing and due to scheduling, now we are with Ms.Deborah who is just as amazing and patient! Apart from enjoying their lessons, kids also enjoy having performance opportunities to showcase their talent and hard work. Overall a great experience with this music school ... Show More

    Adult student learning the violin

I'm an adult beginner learning the violin, and have been learning from Sarah for about five months now. I'm glad to have found her. She's a gifted teacher! Sarah is very knowledgeable, uses analogies and looks for fun tips and tricks to help you learn, and it's obvious that she is committed to her students' learning. She's funny, and makes me laugh every lesson. :) She is thorough and has high standards, which I appreciate, but she also makes learning enjoyable. Whether you're looking for a violin or a viola teacher for your child or for yourself. I highly recommend Sarah be that teacher. : ... Show More

    Director's Message

    Sarah Murley-Hauser, Director & Owner

Welcome to the Willowdale School of Music community! Founded in 2012, Willowdale School of Music has grown from being just myself driving around to student’s houses as the Richmond Hill Suzuki Studio, to an ever expanding multi-instrument music school in the heart of North York.

Regardless of lesson location, WSM’s “Why” has always been the same: The best music lessons teach children more than just how to play their musical instrument, they give children the skills and tools to change the world for the better. Put very simply, when we give children music lessons, we are making the world a better place for everyone.

When I was 3 years old, I started asking for violin lessons, and I kept asking until I was 6 years old and my parents gave in. I know that when I started violin lessons, I started practicing the skills necessary to become a better human being. As I learned how to play the violin, I learned:⠀

    • the process of working hard, failing then succeeding over and over again⠀
    • learning how to play and work with other people in a group⠀
    • how to think critically and uniquely⠀
    • how to look at a problem and figure out how to achieve success⠀
    • that hard work isn't something negative⠀
    • how to create goals and manage failure⠀
    • that if I put my mind to it, success is inevitable for me⠀
    • how to be present in the moment⠀
    • how to take printed notes on a page and breathe life and colour into them⠀
    • trust myself and the process that I put effort into⠀

As I become more and more invested in making the world a better place, all these skills I gained through learning the violin come in hand. ⠀

To be someone who wants to change the world, you need to:⠀

    • think big picture⠀
    • have empathy towards other people who might not think or feel the same as you⠀
    • be present
    • think outside the box and creatively⠀
    • work effectively with other people⠀

And finally, when you are working toward making the world a better place, you will fail, and so you need to be resilient in failure, get back up again and try again. Music taught me that. ⠀

So I started WSM, because I believe to the depths of my being that music makes me a better person, thus I am responsible to share that with others and give the next generation the tools they need to continue the work left to do on to make the world a better place.⠀

No matter what instrument, how young or old, or how much you know about music already, there is a spot for you at Willowdale School of Music.

I can’t wait to meet you at Willowdale School of Music!

    Warmly,

Sarah Murley-Hauser | Director of Willowdale School of Music
