What do kids learn in a woodworking class?

Woodworking class gives kids a number of valuable skills:

They learn to use tools safely. Kids learn how to work with wood using hand tools and some power tools. Classes may have several different projects on the schedule. IN all this, instructors will emphasize safety and personal protection.

They’ll develop hand-eye coordination in this. This is a good skill to continually augment, useful in other tasks, anything from playing sports to using a computer. Working with tools and materials, students learn to coordinate movements as they create things. They tune up their fine motor skills, useful as they grow.

They learn project development, goal setting and related skills in planning, patience and problem-solving. Classes require patience, as it can take time to complete a project, and mistakes can happen on the way. As they work on projects, they encounter problems that need solving. They learn to think critically.

They learn creativity. Kids and teens begin with imagination, to create something unique and interesting. It’s a unique exploration of their creative side. As they work on a project, they learn aspects of the creative process, and discover unique ways in which wood can be worked with creatively.

You might also like these camp and program options

Kids interested in woodworking should check out related camp types and program types that might pique their interest. Have a look at these suggestions:

Cooking camps and baking camps give kids a week or longer in the kitchen, doing hands-on, practical work much like they do in woodworking. Kids learn to cook savoury dishes or bake sweet confections. You can also use our site to find cooking classes, a great way to grow these skills after school.

Arts camps come in a wide array of options. These provide children with a plethora of different ways to further explore creativity through the arts.

Robotics camps are also oriented to practical, hands-on work in a sphere that will be much in-demand as time goes on. Kids learn to code and build things, while also exploring their creativity.

The benefits of a woodworking class for kids

Woodworking is a useful skill for kids, one that can have a lasting impact on their lives. Here’s a look at the benefits:

It’s a creative outlet, wherein kids can find unique means of expression and solve interesting problems. Working with wood, they create something from nothing, and enact a vision that can be very rewarding. It’s a satisfyingly tangible form of expression, contrary to some academic pursuits.

They learn lessons in patience and perseverance. Students learn that good things come through work and diligence. It can be difficult to create things with wood, and over the course of a class, they learn to move toward their goal. Learn more about how kids gain maturity through extracurricular activities like programs and camps.

They learn to work with tools and how to safeguard their safety. In class, they’re taught about safety and learn to follow instructions. They work with tools that can be dangerous, and kids learn responsibility for their own safety.

They learn collaboration and cooperation. Classes are non-competitive. Students inevitably support each other. By watching each other, they learn tips and tricks, and they discover how to help each other.

Finally, woodworking can deepen kids’ appreciation for the natural world. They see the beauty of nature and the importance of preserving our environment.

How to find a good class for your child

As you review woodworking courses near you, here are some suggested questions to ask, to help you find one that’s best for your family:

    1. How much experience do instructors have working with kids this age?
    2. What is the ratio of teachers to students?
    3. Do students need to bring any of their own equipment or tools?
    4. Are parents able to observe their children during class?
    5. Can parents meet their child’s instructor?
    6. What is the pickup and drop off time? (Consider how this meshes with your schedule.)
