Transcript of our interview with Anna, Lakefield College School Summer Programs: Director Interview
I'm Anna. I'm the Camp Director at LCS Summer Academy. Our camp programs serve campers aged 4 to 18. We have both a junior day camp program and a program for campers aged 11 and up, which includes overnight options. That older program includes credit course options. I oversee both sides of our programming.
Our camp offers a unique blend of traditional camp activities and academic or credit course options. We welcome local children from the community who use our facilities through the day camp, as well as students from across Ontario and internationally who come to experience our school and the academic side of our programming.
The most unique part of our facility is that we have a farm as part of our campus. We offer what you would expect from traditional summer camp programming—like a waterfront and climbing—but we also have a farm where we grow produce.
All of our campers and students get the opportunity to visit the farm as often as they like by signing up for farm activities. We make the commitment that everyone visits the farm at least once to see our processes. The farm operates under a sustainable agricultural framework. We focus on sustainability in green industries and how we can support food insecurity in our local area.
Much of the produce we generate at the farm is donated to local food banks, while the rest is used in our campus kitchens. Campers get to eat the food they've helped grow, which is a really cool and unique experience. All ages enjoy it in different ways—whether it’s four-year-olds harvesting raspberries (and eating most of them) or older campers planting and seeing the food cycle firsthand.
Campers who are curious will thrive here because there are so many opportunities to explore new things. Campers who love the outdoors will also do well. One of our core values is "outdoors every day." Regardless of which program a camper is enrolled in—even if it’s a grade 10 science course—they’ll spend time outside daily.
Outdoor time might be part of their formal academic learning or their afternoon camp activities, but we expect campers to embrace nature, even on rainy July days. It’s about appreciating the outdoors in all the environments we experience it.
We use a variety of methods depending on the camper. The approach is tailored to each individual. We make a real effort to understand our campers by connecting with families and collecting information about what works well, what their needs are, and what their unique traits might be.
This helps us prepare in advance for scenarios that might be more or less challenging for particular campers. We establish clear expectations and communicate them consistently. Our foundation is built on mutual understanding and shared values.
We take a calm, restorative approach. We walk through situations with the camper, helping them understand how their behavior may not align with the values of our community. We guide them through repairing relationships or making amends when needed, and we help them learn and grow from those experiences during their time with us.
Campers really value our outdoor approach and the uniqueness of our programming. For example, a day camper could go home each day having done something exciting—maybe they went canoeing to Tattle Island to see turtles, climbed for the first time, learned to sail, or spent time on the farm.
We emphasize making every day unique and meaningful for our campers. Each day should give them a new experience that becomes a lifelong memory. Our wide range of exciting activities ensures that no two days are the same at camp.
Summer at camp is such an exciting opportunity to learn, grow, and try new things. For campers who may not yet know what their passion or hobby is, coming to a camp like ours offers the chance to explore many different experiences and activities.
Our goal is to help all of our campers find something that excites them—something they can fall in love with. A camper might discover that they love being in the woods and decide to sign up for a Bushcraft program. That kind of discovery is incredibly rewarding for us.
We take great joy in helping campers find their passion and motivation. Over the summers they spend with us, they can dive deeper into what excites them and build on that foundation year after year.
LCS has the highest standards for our staff, with many of our facilitators being qualified educators and all staff being certified in their area of expertise. Every staff members is First Aid + CPR qualified, with many staff possessing Bronze Cross, National Lifeguarding, Climbing, ORCKA, and Wilderness Certifications. Our staffing team ratios meet or exceed OCA standards for all programs and they complete extensive staff training in risk management, behaviour modification, equity and diversity, and facilitation techniques.

Is Lakefield College School Summer Programs technology free?
At LCS Summer Camps, we are intentional about how and when technology is used. Our programs are designed to prioritize presence, connection, outdoor learning, and meaningful engagement with peers and educators. To support this, campers follow clear guidelines around mobile phone and computer use, with technology set aside during learning blocks, meals, overnight programs, camping trips, and times dedicated to rest and community. This approach helps campers unplug, build independence, and fully experience camp life—while ensuring appropriate access when needed.
All academic credit courses require students to bring a laptop computer with them to the program.
To encourage healthy sleeping habits, all LCS Summer Academy and Program campers are required to turn in their technology to the residential staff on duty prior to lights out.
In case of an emergency and/or if you need to get a hold of your child, we will provide our emergency phone number closer to the program start.
