Brain Power's annual K–12 enrichment programs in Math and Problem Solving, Language Arts, and Public Speaking build the critical thinking, creativity, and joyful engagement that top universities and future employers actually value. PhD-level faculty lead Socratic discussions in small classes. No drills, no worksheets, no rote memorization. 2. Complete an assessment interview
Book your assessment interview at www.brainpower.ca and visit a Brain Power campus to meet our faculty and administrative team. Students complete a 40 to 60 minute assessment so we can determine the right placement level for their program. Parents participate in the interview as well.
3. Register
Students who are a good fit are invited to join a program and become part of the Brain Power learning community.
No assessment is required for Public Speaking, workshops, or summer programs (direct registration available at www.brainpower.ca)

What makes your organization unique compared to others?
At Brain Power Enrichment Programs, we teach students how to think, not what to think. What does that mean? It means that our PhD and expert mentors guide students through math, language, and public speaking programs that ask deep questions, challenge students to problem-solve creatively, and use critical thinking.
We don't love worksheets, we don't use speed drills, and our classes are highly engaging, featuring collaborative group work, interesting logic, and creative problem-solving exercises. Most of all, students develop a deeper relationship with knowledge and a deeper understanding of their capabilities in this world.
What type of child is successful at your organization?
At Brain Power Enrichment Programs, we work with bright students. This is not after-school tutoring and it's not remedial. Our programs are designed to challenge and stretch kids.
However, the definition of bright is a little bit controversial. We don't only work with students identified as gifted. In fact, many of the students we work with are bright, but this may have been missed in their day school.
For example, creative bright students are often labeled as too high-energy and disruptive in a classroom. And they join us because they have an exceptional passion for math, and their brains are working so fast. Twice-exceptional students might get stuck behind a label but have an incredible talent in a particular area.
There’s a type of student we call the underground student, a student who's simply not expressed their ideas and their capabilities yet. Our assessments help discover the different types of bright students, and we place students based on where we think they fit capability-wise, not just by age and grade.
Is the schedule structured or is it more open?
At Brain Power Enrichment Programs, we do have predetermined schedules. That's very critical to the learning experience. Kids move through the program as a system together in a group.
However, we have lots of options. The program runs seven days a week at 12 campuses in Canada and five campuses in the US, so you'll likely find a time and day of the week that works for you.
How does your staff deal with behavioural issues?
We don't wait for behavioural issues to disrupt classrooms. We proactively help minimize behavioural issues by doing a few things. The very first thing is all students who join us complete an intake assessment. This helps us understand the child, their energy level, and their interests, and place them in a class that best suits them.
Something we often hear from parents, particularly of creative or twice-exceptional students, is that they're a disruption during their day school. In those cases, we might learn that they are actually working at a level or two above standard, and when we place them in the right group, they're naturally less disruptive.
That being said, behaviour issues do happen, and there are a few things that we do. Our curriculum, first of all, is designed to scaffold up and down based on a student's particular learning style.
So if a student is extra chatty, we might have them complete an exercise at the board with another student. If a student is a little more quiet and moody, we might encourage them to complete more quiet exercises, but still in a collaborative setting.
It all boils down to the basic foundational principle that we see your child, we know your child, and we design a learning experience for them.
What do students value most about their experience?
Something we're very proud of at Brain Power Enrichment Programs is students who join us in grade 1 or 2 often stay all the way till grade 11. And when we ask our alumni, "Why did you stay with Brain Power Enrichment Programs for seven years? Why did you take many different courses?" They'll often say that they worked with mentors who motivated them, asked them questions they'd never heard before, and had the opportunity to meet other students like them.
Students who were curious, creative, loved unpacking challenging problems in a fun way. And these are the reasons that alumni share with us.
We also observe that when students leave our classrooms, they're smiling. They're often really excited to tell their parents what they learned that day.
Our philosophy is that enrichment doesn't have to be boring. It doesn't have to be rigid. We aim for an aha moment and a giggle in every single class. And that keeps students engaged, interested, and excited to join us year after year.
What message would you give to new participants?
My message to future Brain Power Enrichment Programs students is to join us with an open mind. We have so many students who join us and say things like, "I'm just not a math kid," or, "I'm a math kid, and I'm not really a writing kid," and we learn that when you put students in the right environment and respect their intellect, it's incredible what they can discover about themselves.
I had a conversation a few weeks ago with two teenage boys about existentialism, and I met a student who was an AMC Math Award winner who discovered his love for writing and won a national writing contest. Our students achieve incredible things when they are open-minded to stretch their skills and think in a way that they haven't thought about before.

Director's Message
Brain Power offers many unique courses in the fields of English Language Arts; Public Speaking; Mathematics and Problem Solving; Science; Mechanics of Writing; Entrance Exam Preparation; High School Preparation; University Preparation; and Ivy League Preparation.
A leader in after-school enrichment, Brain Power empowers bright and gifted students in grades 1 through 12 who thrive in a challenging environment. Brain Power has grown over the decades with what I describe as a mission “to provide unique curriculum, world-class teaching, and experiential learning opportunities, all while exceeding current educational standards and promoting a social conscience.” As the founder and director, it is my aim to make it clear to those new to Brain Power that we are not one of the many tutoring centres that dominate after-school education options; rather, we are a niche after-school enrichment learning centre designated only for bright and gifted students, thus responding to the provincial and federal demand for fostering the growth of ambitious students. Indeed, given our unique approach, Brain Power has put Canada on the map for enrichment education for bright children in the world.
Unlike other after-school learning centres, our goal is not to have our students speed through the Ministry of Education’s curriculum. Instead, we have developed our own advanced enrichment curriculum that is taught by (mostly) Ph.D. level instructors. These high education levels, unique compared to other enrichment centres, mean that our instructors have the expertise to teach sophisticated and challenging ideas. Our brilliant students, who are often not sufficiently stimulated by their day schools, find true mentors in our instructors, who are curious intellectuals like them. Providing a refreshingly low student-to-teacher ratio in relation to most classrooms, our raison d’etre is to be an ideal learning space for high-achieving students.
Brain Power is a mecca of intellectual achievement and social justice that stirs students’ interests in academic pursuits and global issues far beyond the scope of a single school. With Brain’s support and encouragement, our students participate in an array of academic, creative, and entrepreneurial competitions, collaborations, and showcases. They have won top prizes in an array of prestigious local, provincial, national and international academic and entrepreneurial competitions. We’re proud of our students, and we plan to continue providing motivating mentorship and experiential growth opportunities like no other educational facility in North America.
Brain Power graduates tend to have incredible academic achievements, obtain impressive scholarships, take on amazing career trajectories, and live inspiring success stories - and they attribute their success to the fantastic opportunities they found at Brain Power. There is nothing we are more proud of than playing a part in their impressive accomplishments and helping to create young innovators and future leaders.
Our star team of staff makes Brain Power a site of educational excellence. Since I select instructors for their playfulness, gregariousness, and charisma in addition to their educational credentials, Brain Power is a fun and animated space where like-minded people meet. Looking at the staff and students at Brain Power, I feel very optimistic about our future.

Is Brain Power Enrichment Programs technology free? With the AT-HOME use of an online Learning Management System (LMS) IN ADDITION TO IN-CLASS LEARNING (when safe), students have 24-hour access to our material, and parents enjoy the transparency that comes with instant and secure access to their child’s performance in our classes. While the software supplements our courses by making learning easier outside of class, our in-class work remains dynamic, meaningful, hands-on, personable, and very much human.
