Kids that attend summer camps during July and August, tend do to better in school, but the benefits of attending summer camp go far beyond better grades. Alberta summer camps, from Calgary to Edmonton, will give your child the opportunity to try new activities and sports, gain self confidence, and build leadership skills within a positive and nurturing environment.

Types of camps in Alberta

Alberta offers many different types of summer camps for kids aged 2 to 18. A traditional overnight camp experience is something every child should experience, and there are great options from Rocky Mountain House and Sundre to Halkirk and Ferintosch.

For kids with a special focus, Alberta's cities of Edmonton, Calgary and Chestermere offer children both multi-activity and specialized programs in arts, dance, technologysports and horseback riding

How safe are camps in Alberta?

Camp safey is the highest priority for camp owners, directors and staff. For both day and overnight summer camps in Alberta, parents should expect first-aid trained staff and high staff-to-camper ratios (higher than a school environment). Click here for more on staff training and camp safety.

It's important to note that not all camps in Alberta are run the same, so be sure to ask questions before you register.

  • How are camp staff trained? What's the staff to camper ratio
  • How much of the day is structured, how much is free-play?
  • What will my child gain by attending your camp?

Regulation of summer camps in Alberta

The Alberta Camping Association (ACA) is a provincial organization represent organized summer and youth camps in Alberta.  Each member camp goes through the Standards and Accreditation program that includes a formal accreditation visit once every three years that covers all aspects of camp operations.

Parents should be aware that camps are not required to be a part of ACA, and many non-member camps also offer excellent safe and well-run programs that meet or exceed standards.
