Academic camps and programs extend learning beyond classroom walls.

Daniel’s found a safe place to learn, and he comes back really excited about the things he has picked up, ready to apply it in new ways at school and other places. We’re hoping that he might eventually develop a career based on some of the stuff he’s learned at camp. – Digital Media Academy parent

What are educational camps?

Educational camps come in many different forms. Wide ranges of these specialty camps are aimed at teaching children in a specific area.

Educational camps

For example, academic-oriented camps may focus on math, engineering or debating skills. At computer camp, beginner to advanced level teaching helps children expand their knowledge base.

Some popular educational and academic camps include:

  • Animal and Nature Camps
  • College and SAT Preparation
  • Computer Camps
  • ESL / English Language Learners Camps
  • Foreign Language Programs
  • Science & Cultural Programs
  • Leadership & Community Service

Why academic camps and programs?

Summer, winter and March break education camps allow kids to explore and develop their interests and abilities. Campers gain valuable skills that further develop passions and interests while preparing them for success in school and later in the workforce. Some academic-based camps are geared towards helping struggling students improve their academic performance in school.

Educational camps and programs are alternative classrooms and learning settings - sometimes without walls – that help children advance an educational interest or skill.

All types of camps offer tremendous opportunities for children to learn. For example, a lot can be discovered about insects, flora and fauna during a long hike in the wilderness. Studies show that 98% of campers develop improved problem solving and memory skills and continue to use these skills once camp is over.

What to look for in an academic camp or program

If you’re looking for an academic camp or program for your child, you have plenty of options. You should first determine the setting you’re looking for. Many programs are offered in a school environment, while others are offered outdoors or at a traditional camp environment. Some camps even offer a mix of both environments.

Is your child interested in developing a particular interest like robotics, creative writing or zoology? If so, you’ll want to choose a camp that has access to the right equipment and resources. Look for camps with qualified instructors who are experienced in the area of interest.

Skills Work!® Summer Camp
Skills Work! Summer Camp
Skilled Trades Activities Jul 06-Aug 21 Ages 11 - 13
Coed
Day
$175 2015-07-06 175-175 ,11,12,13,

This summer program for youth in grade seven & eight was developed by Skills Ontario in 2000 due to a workforce deficiency in the area of skilled trades and technologies, along with a requirement for employees to have resilient, transferable skills.

It is imperative for young people to be informed and educated on the various careers associated with skilled trades and technologies, prior to attending high school. This allows them to determine their talents and interests, and to explore the various career choices available. The Skills Work!® Camps offer this incredible opportunity. The workshops and activities completed at camp assist in portraying the growth of technical and soft skills that are essential to thrive in this fluctuating work world. Across Ontario, we have over 20 camp locations (please see dates and locations below) including specialized camps for Indigenous youth, girls and boys-only camps, and French camps.

During this week-long day camp, campers partake in four to six half-day skilled trades and technology workshops presented by local experts. Tours of local industries may occur in order to give campers a glance of the working world and the various skilled trade careers that are accessible within their personal community. Other hands-on activities focused on entrepreneurship and the development of employability skills, such as team work, problem solving, and effective communication.

From an initiative that tries to save the wildlife to a company that provides workshops that teach parents to tweet – it’s totally up to them! With the help and advice of some of Toronto’s most acclaimed startups, we’ll guide the girls through the motions of going from brainstorm to execution.

Girls will learn how to budget and finance their company and understand the difference between for profit and not for profit structures. Girls will develop business models and conclude the week with a company faire that will be open to the press, public, established startups and local startup funders and investors.

This program introduces you to the exciting world of journalism. All that is required from you is a keen interest in news and story-telling. From day one, you are immersed in the fast-paced world of reporting. You learn how to research, shoot and edit your own story. You learn the basics of news reporting. Working in small supervised teams, you carry out journalism assignments in the downtown core of Canada’s largest city. You ask the questions, “Who? What? Where? When? How?”

As a junior journalist, you learn how to tell a complete story in a limited time. You learn the basics of shooting, audio recording and editing. You learn how to use Ryerson’s state-of-the-art high definition television studio, and are on camera reading news, sports and entertainment stories. You learn how to use a green screen and host a weathercast in front of the weather map. By the end of the week, you have produced a news show and create an online portfolio that highlights your work.

Learning Goals: This is an intensive introductory journalism training course for high school students. Students learn from professionals and get hands-on training in reporting, hosting, writing, videography, television studio operations, and sound design. Today’s journalist must be comfortable working in all platforms and this is a great place to start. The course is offered by Ryerson’s School of Journalism in partnership with the Department of Athletics.

Hosted at the Library’s Digital Media Experience Lab on the third floor of the new Student Learning Centre in downtown Toronto, participants complete two major design projects with the guidance of graduate students and faculty.

The first project familiarizes students with ideation and basic robotics, using accessible 3D software and open-source electronics. The second project ties everything together by incorporating 3D printing, Arduino Development Boards and sensors / actuators to create working robots. Projects are completed in collaboration with other students and the complexity of the projects are matched to the skills of the registrants to ensure all participants can customize their experience.

Students also have time to explore Ryerson University and the surrounding downtown core and leave the camp with working robots they've designed and built, including all electrical and mechanical components.

SECRET AGENT LAB

Campers will use forensic science to track down an elusive ice cream thief. A visit to Cell City will reveal the inner workings of DNA while a trip down the Organ Trail will provide a Body Portrait! FLIGHT ACADEMY

The week will fly by as we travel through time looking at the earliest flying machines right up to modern day rocket launches. We’ll cover it all. Become a Junior Aviator and discover the principals of flight and aerodynamics. Zip up your space suit for a planetary tour while we investigate the wonders of our very own Milky Way.  Join your fellow astronauts as we send an awesome Mad Science rocket to the moon…well at least into the sky! As Mad Science Technicians, you will build sundials, Bead Dippers, parachutes and an incredible wind tunnel simulator. It will be a blast!

ROCKET CAMP

Yes we are Rocket Scientists! And you can be too! Blast to the top of the class with an in depth look at all things ROCKET! This action packed week focuses on the physics of rocket flight, the parts of a rocket and rocket launches. You will experience every aspect of rocket launching as you join a different crew each day. Prepare for launch, send your rockets into the sky and track their altitudes as we launch 10 different rockets each week! You are certain to have a blast exploring, building and launching many varieties of rockets.

Camp-Day Themes include: Rocket Scientists, Rocket Flight, Mission Control, Rocket Propulsion & Recovery, Go For Launch

CHECKMATE CHESS CAMP

Chess the Mad Science way is a blast. Everyday children will learn the chess rules, strategies and tactics. Game pieces have been given extraordinary personalities and are brought to life. Play with our giant chess set - the biggest you've ever seen! Campers receive their own magnetic chess set. As an extra bonus, part of each day will be spent doing super-cool science where children will make a daily take-home activity such as a Rocket, Stunt Plane, Space Shuttle, Racer Car, Silly Putty, Superball and more.

EUREKA!

Welcome to the world of inventions! Children will be challenged to overcome a series of daily tasks by using their brains, brawn, tips from famous inventors, cool equipment and simple machines. They’ll create catapults and forts, design their own light sabers, and assemble a set of circuits using batteries and light bulbs.  While Thomas Edison said invention is 10% inspiration and 90% perspiration, this camp is 100% FUN!  Each day is unique but they are all designed to be fun, exciting and hands-on.

Camp-Day Themes include: Shipwrecked, Whiz Kids, Rock-Paper-Scissors, Think Fast, Science Fiction
