The Greater Toronto Area (GTA) is home to numerous private schools for ADHD students. Special needs schools with programs to help kids with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder are the best education options for children with ADHD. ADHD education aids or teachers in Toronto have comprehensive training in assisting students with the disorder. If you are concerned about paying for a private school, we have "Tips on Paying for Private School." You should also know that if your child attends a private school for children with special needs, you may be eligible for a medical tax break.

The GTA has numerous schools with ADHD support. Here, you will find diversity amongst types of schools across Toronto, Mississauga, Markham, Scarborough and all of Ontario that have ADHD education programs. You have many options, such as traditional, special needs schools, learning disability schoolsfaith-based schools, day and boarding private schools.

During your in-person interviews or when you are filling out school applications, you should be as detailed as possible. Hiding information that could help the private school improve your child's education will only hurt him or her in the long-term. Furthermore, getting into a Toronto private school is not as important as finding the right fit for your special needs. In short, the school needs to know a lot about your ADHD child to identify whether such a match exists.

Signs of ADHD

ADHD Canada lists numerous signs of ADHD, such as trouble sitting still, constant daydreaming, difficulty taking turns and inability to focus on one thing (e.g. wandering from toy to toy. ADHD Canada also notes that "no special psychological or laboratory test diagnose this disorder." Instead, "a collection of evidence and the elimination of other possible causes for the symptoms" comprise the diagnosis. Ourkids.net also provides a more detailed list of ADHD symptoms.

Advantages of Toronto Private Schools for Students with ADHD

  • GTA Private schools have small class sizes and are well-controlled environments. Thus, they recognize each student's strong points and weaknesses and then adapt to his or her needs. Simply put, teachers engage more with each individual than they would be able to in schools with larger classes. Because ADHD manifests differently in each student, this individualistic educational approach is ideal. There are ADHD Schools throughout the Greater Toronto Area to choose from.
  • A private school will scrutinize your child's application before accepting him or her into the school. This review provides the school (special needs-focused or not) with an opportunity to decide whether it can provide the best educational experience and proper supports for your son or daughter.
  • Your location does not restrict your school options. Indeed, if you enroll your child with ADHD at a private school in Toronto, the GTA, or anywhere in Ontario, you will have chosen from a multitude of top schools.
  • Most of Toronto's private schools offer extra help outside of class. As such, your child could talk to a teacher in a stress-free and calm environment. This added attention is vital for children with ADHD, as they may tend to fall behind their classmates.

Below, you will find ADHD schools in Toronto proper and elsewhere in the GTA and Ontario, including ADHD schools in Richmond Hill, Mississauga, Oakville, Pickering, Scarborough, Ajax, Thornhill, Unionville, and Port Hope.
