Online elementary schools vary significantly in how they deliver learning. Some are regular brick-and-mortar schools with live classes that also offer an online option. At the other end of the spectrum are fully online schools that give young learners a flexible, self-paced program they complete. with the support of parents.
What’s right for your child or family depends on many factors, including your child’s age, their learning style, personal independence, and their need for structure. Younger children typically require more personal support from a parent or guardian, while kids in middle and upper grades of elementary may be able to handle more independence.
Full-time online elementary programs replace in-person classes. Students complete most or all of their learning online, following a provincial curriculum and aligned with grade-level expectations.
These programs are ideal for families who travel a lot, for kids with special health needs or learning preferences, or for families who are otherwise unsatisfied with other educational options. Kids can benefit from the quieter environment, without distractions, offering a more personalized learning pace.
Parents should confirm how involved the teacher is, how much work is included, and how much daily support they are expected to give.
Some schools offer part-time or supplemental online classes over full-time enrollment. Classes may focus on individual subjects, or they can be enrichment classes, remedial support or tutoring-style programs. These can also be taken alongside another school arrangement.
This kind of online learning is ideal for kids who need extra help in a subject, are learning from home, or want to learn something not taught in their current school.
Parents should ask whether the program provides report cards, or whether the courses are intended mainly for enrichment or support.
There are three broad ways online elementary classes are typically offered:
Live delivery (aka synchronous learning): Online classes are regularly scheduled and students are taught in real time. Kids can have regular interaction (sometimes even with other students), and they’re given direct instruction and immediate feedback, as they would in a structured school day. This is ideal for students who benefit from routine and teacher-led learning or for families who want something as close as possible to “regular school.”
Self-paced delivery (aka asynchronous learning): Students do lessons and assignments on their own time, typically supervised by a parent. This is more flexible but it also requires stronger family involvement. Younger children may not be suitable or ready for this.
Mixed delivery: This combines live online class work with independent learning. This balances things, providing regular teacher contact, scheduled lessons, and routine, with flexibility and independence.
Parents should confirm whether classes are live, recorded, text-based, activity-based, or a combination of formats.
Parent involvement is a much bigger factor in online elementary education. Elementary students typically need adult supervision to help them with the technology, stay on task, understand instructions, and complete activities offline, as well as managing breaks (“online recess”). The expected level of parental involvement would be inversely relational to the age of the child, but students in grades 6 to 8 students will still require structure, reminders, and accountability.
Parents should ask the online learning provider how many hours per day they’re expected to be available and how much they are actually teaching.
