The evolution and controversies of online learning in the classroom

Perspectives, opinions, and debates

Here we discuss the evolution of and controversies surrounding online learning. Below, we also provide two separate lists of schools: (1) fully online schools and (2) partly online schools.

Online and virtual learning involves integrating technology into the classroom. This can include virtual learning that’s completely or mostly independent of teacher involvement (e.g., synchronous or distance learning) to learning that involves any form of technology.

Online learning can enhance students' education in many innovative, exciting, challenging ways. Using technology in the classroom is no simple matter, though. It raises a number of complex questions private and public schools must address.

Schools and educators have a wide range of views on the value of virtual and distance education. Some dismiss it as a distraction, while others entertain the possibility of virtual learning as a complete replacement for all instruction (and some schools offer this). And, of course, there are many views in between these two extremes.

Read our more in-depth articles on online learning in schools

Virtual learning yesterday, today, and tomorrow

Initially, virtual learning involved supplementing lessons with, for example, CD-ROMs and internet research. But it’s evolved considerably over the years. There’s more focus now on Computer Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL).

Like social media, CSCL depends on social interaction. It focuses on the shared development of knowledge by integrating chat, blogging, video, Facebook, Second Life, electronic Role Playing Games (RPGs), and many other virtual and online tools to augment collaboration and communication.

Like many things digital, virtual learning continues to change at a rapid pace. SMART boards are becoming standard in classrooms, and students are able to access the internet from their desks in an increasing number of ways (e.g., laptops, iPads, smartphones, etc.).

Virtual learning: problems and issues

This increases the potential of virtual and e-learning to augment education. It can also create a complication: the rapid pace of technology can sometimes outgrow schools' budgets and the ability of teachers and curricula to adapt.

Teachers need to learn to manage the student experience and technology's integration with learning—no small task. We’ve heard from students themselves, who cite the limitations of learning with "no face-to-face support from my teachers or peers."

For these reasons, among others, virtual learning is continually assessed and re-adjusted in private and public schools. And, needless to say, it’s an inevitable part of our future. Many schools offer online courses for elementary, middle, and high school. And, today, almost all schools use virtual learning in some shape or form.
