The pros and cons of online learning in schools

The viability of an online learning school

Here we provide you with a list of the pros and cons of online learning in schools. Below, we also provide two separate lists of schools: (1) fully online schools and (2) partly online schools.

Fully online schools versus schools partly online schools

Fully online schools, as you might expect, offer online learning exclusively. All of their courses are online and none are in person. These schools don’t have a physical campus and provide no in-person interaction, for instance, with teachers, staff, or administrators. Everything is online in these schools.

Partly online schools, on the other hand, offer online courses to supplement in-person learning. These schools have a physical campus but provide some form of online learning, the amount and type of which varies among schools.

Some of these schools, though not all, emerged in response to COVID-19. And, while some will continue offering some form of online learning when the pandemic subsides, others won’t.

The benefits and concerns with online learning in schools

When searching for schools, you should create a shortlist of schools you think might be the best fit for your child and family. Research these schools comprehensively and visit them, either in person or virtually (if necessary). Ask school reps plenty of questions

This should help give you a sense of whether a school, online or in-person, meets your needs. Here, we provide a list of the pros and cons of schools with online learning in general, as well as a list of the pros of fully vs. partly online schools.

Pros and cons of online learning in general

Pros

Cons

Benefits of attending a fully vs. partly online school

Fully online school

Partly online school

  • No need for travel. Convenient for scheduling.
  • Can be great to get out of the house and see people in person.
  • Lots of independent work. Good for self-motivated kids.
  • Lots of in-person interaction (in their offline courses) with teachers, students, and staff. This can make school more engaging.
  • Kids can pick and choose their courses. They can work at their own pace.
  • Can have a combination of online and in-person courses. Can be the best of both worlds
  • Can be good for older kids who want to speed up their education.
  • In-person courses often allow for more supervision and guidance.
