STEM camps, like STEM after-school programs, help prepare kids for a wide range of educational and career paths. Children interested in one or more STEM subjects—science, technology, engineering and math—are great candidates for STEM. They’ll engage in interdisciplinary learning and activities that may help them to decide which of these disciplines they’re most interested in.

The STEM curriculum is often taught by guest experts and professionals in the field. For example, this can include university professors. The focus on (and love of) learning in these camps spreads from camp counselors, instructors, and guests to the students. In the acronym STEAM, the “a” stands for arts. In a STEAM camp there is, by definition, even more expansive learning. The integration of arts quite often involves the use of design principles (for instance, you'll find this at The STEAM Project). Some critics of the STEM approach look at this as a weakness, but its defenders note that their integrated approach does in fact connect with all other disciplines, including those more generally called “the arts.”

Besides some of the more obvious options, such as a scientist, mathematician, computer programmer, and engineer, it can provide the basis for myriad career opportunities in the sciences and social sciences. How do you know if a STEM camp is for your child? And if it is, how do you know which is the right STEM camp for your child?
To answer the first question, you’ll need to look at your child. Are they interested in the maths and sciences? Are they curious? Do they enjoy both abstract pursuits and hands-on work?
If the answer is “yes” to one or more of these questions, your child is likely a good candidate for a STEM camp.
