There are essentially three broad variants in terms of how online high school classes are delivered:
Live delivery (aka synchronous): Online classes are on a schedule, taught by a teacher in real time, and students must attend at the scheduled time. This has the advantage of immediate feedback, regular interaction, and a structured school day. It’s also inflexible, of course.
Self-paced delivery (aka asynchronous): Students complete lessons and assignments on their own schedule, but usually with some kind of deadline. This gives high school students flexibility but requires them to be independent learners, managing their own schedule.
Mixed delivery: A combination of live classes and self-paced coursework. Students still have regular teacher contact but have some flexibility in completing assignments and coursework. These might also be called hybrid or partly online programs.
Students should confirm that the school is authorised to grant the credits and the high school diploma. Beware of potential credit mills.
Sometimes, students require one or a few courses to complete their high school diploma or just to catch up. Individual online credit courses allow them to complete high school courses without transferring full-time to the school. Other cases where students might want to take a course online are: to meet a prerequisite, resolve a timetable conflict, to study a subject that their current school doesn’t offer, or just to complete an additional credit.
You can inquire at schools listed above, what online courses are available to outside students and what the requirements are, especially with regard to course completion deadlines, and exams and assessments.
Students should confirm that the course will be recognized by your main school and accepted for your intended post-secondary program. Also confirm how the credit will be added to your transcript.
Course upgrade and repeat programs allow students to retake a course or improve a mark on their student record. These also help sharpen a student’s understanding of course material before moving to more advanced material.
Students should confirm that the upgrading format is right for their situation. They should also ensure that their chosen university or college will consider the new mark,and whether it will replace or appear alongside their previous mark on their student record.
Summer and accelerated online courses compress the coursework into a shorter period. Courses that normally run for a semester may be completed over a few weeks, although the total curriculum and assessment requirements should remain comparable. These are ideal for ambitious students who want to earn additional credits or who want to speed up the completion of high school. It’s also an ideal way to fill in a missing prerequisite or to improve a grade (see above). Students should be aware that these tend to be intensive and often require daily work.
Students should confirm how many hours per week of work are expected and how much teacher support is available in the compressed schedule.
Mature students can earn missing high school credits online, complete graduation requirements, or even obtain a high school diploma. Programs may recognize previous schooling (even from decades ago), work experience, training, or other eligible forms of prior learning.
International OSSD programs allow students living abroad to complete high school credits and work toward their high school diploma.
