    What reading camps offer

    According to one study, up to 66% of 4th grade kids are not considered “proficient in reading.”* Reading camp can be beneficial to many kids whose parents aren’t even looking for help in this area. They spark curiosity in young people, helping them internalize a desire to learn, to explore the value of reading and to experience for themselves the way increased literacy opens up new worlds. Of course, camps are also ideal for kids for whom English is a second language. 

    Many of the camps listed through OurKids.net take place in an academic setting such as private schools or tutoring services. This kind of setting is ideally equipped with technology, learning aids, and reading materials. Kids may be tutored one-on-one here, and they also benefit from working in groups with others at the same reading level. Camp is staffed by caring educators who love working with kids and who are passionate about helping kids read better. 

    The camp setting makes learning and self-improvement fun. Here, kids find themselves among peers with similar needs and interests. Kids’ reading camp is often structured around themes that make learning and reading enjoyable. For example, one camp lists weekly themes including superheroes, the  environment, fantasy fiction, and others. Other camps may offer a variety of typical camp activities like swimming and soccer that help break up learning.  

    Look closer at some benefits:

    • Improved literacy is, of course, a gateway to better grades. Improved reading skills improves other intellectual skills like abstract thinking and the ability to make connections. Learning to read deeper, campers accelerate their knowledge acquisition, which leads to further improvements in literacy. 
    • Improved grades increase kids' enjoyment of school, and improve self-confidence. This, in turn, leads to growth in other areas. Children grow emotionally, through improved literacy. They’re better able to articulate their own thoughts and ideas, participate more in adult conversations, and develop a healthier self-esteem and increased self awareness. 
    • Camps will also help kids develop writing skills or may also include development in other subjects like math, science, and other school subjects. Improved reading skills improves intellectual skills like abstract thinking and kids’ ability to make connections. 

    Literacy's importance for future jobs

    Reading skills are essential for any academic success and to kids' success in higher learning. 

    While literacy has become increasingly valuable in the workforce in recent years, its importance increases all the time. One contemporary study found that unemployment among people with low literacy is over 25%, while the unemployment rate among people with high literacy is below 5%. 70% of Canadian jobs require college-level reading skills. Most other jobs require a basic level of literacy. Note also that low level jobs that don't require literacy are being replaced by automation. 

    In this new millennium, reading skills will be fundamental to what observers like Janice Dole call “high literacy”, an increasingly valued skill. “High literacy” consists of thinking deeply and learning mindfully and assumes fundamental literacy skills. Mastering basic literacy and reading is an essential component of this “high literacy, which involves, at the least, (a) self-regulating and monitoring one’s thinking and learning; (b) understanding and empathizing with a diversity of ideas and beliefs; (c) examining multiple perspectives on problems and solutions; (d) selecting, organizing, interpreting, and synthesizing new information; (e) working in collaboration with others from many different cultures and perspectives; and (f) sharing knowledge and expertise with others in solving problems.” In today’s workplace, we're already seeing the increased valuation of skills she describes. Core literacy is fundamental to the development of these critical character attributes she lists.

    ESL camp is another fun way for kids for whom English is a second language to deepen their understanding of English and improve their usage.

    • Has the camp ever had to deal with bullying issues? What is their policy concerning this? 
    • How much time is spent on reading activities versus other camp activities?
    • What is the instructor-to-camper ratio?
    • Can you provide testimonials from other campers and parents?
