Becoming a Part of One Big Happy Camp Family

At overnight camp, children fully live out the summer camp experience—day and night. Campers live away from their families for a few days or longer under the supervision of experienced staff. They room with kids their age and gender in cabins or tents.

Encouraging youth to discover and develop skills and passions, overnight camps offer a mix of activities or have a specialized focus, such as on arts, sports or education.

The tight-knit community of most overnight camps helps kids develop important life skills, such as how to share, co-operate and compromise, says Jeff Bradshaw, the former president of the Canadian Camping Association.

"Each day is full of activities that require co-operation, such as crewing a sailboat, paddling a canoe, building a campfire or pitching a tent," says Bradshaw, who is also the owner of Camp Wenonah, a traditional overnight camp in Muskoka, Ont. "Children learn to share living space, a bag of marshmallows and their counsellor's attention. They learn skills that lead to tolerating differences, reaching consensus and celebrating achievements."

Independence is another key skill that overnight camp teaches children, Bradshaw says.

"They learn to keep their own belongings organized, hang up their wet bathing suits and towels, and tidy their section of the cabin,” he says. “They are encouraged to do what they are capable of doing with a little effort."

A 2005 study on overnight summer camps from the University of Toronto confirms these benefits and cites others, such as improved self-image, appreciation of socio-cultural diversity and increased respect for the environment.

Overnight camp is also a safe and welcoming place for kids who face bullying and peer pressure at school.

“We hope that kids will feel what it’s like to be cared for and accepted for who they are because many kids don’t feel that,” says Scott Bayley, executive director of Camp Qwanoes, a Christian camp on Vancouver Island that is open to everyone, not just those with religious beliefs.

The big question is this: How do you know if your child is ready for overnight camp?

“Age is not a factor,” says Bronco Cathcart, president of the B.C. Camping Association. “Children excited by the prospect of going to overnight camp, who understand and are comfortable that mom and dad won't be there at night, are probably ready.”

For many youth, overnight camp leads to lifelong friendships and becoming a part of the camp family. “What is really amazing to me are the counsellors who genuinely care for every camper,” says Amanda Dreisinger, 15, who has attended Camp Qwanoes for the past six years. “I’ve seen so many kids’ lives changed by it.”
