Elmwood School: Inspiring Girls to Become the Women Who Change the World

Academic excellence, a caring atmosphere and strong community spirit are what make Elmwood stand apart as the most innovative girls’ school in Canada.  Here, girls are encouraged to try new things, create and explore.  “We believe that every Elmwood girl has amazing potential and our promise is to help them reach it,” says Cheryl Boughton, Headmistress.

The All-Girls Advantage

“We know that girls learn best in an all-girls environment,” says Boughton.  Elmwood’s approach to learning is based on research that shows that girls take more risks, learn to fail and make mistakes but get back up again and try in the supportive environment of all girls.  “At Elmwood, girls take on leadership roles, explore non-traditional courses, and act as role models to their peers,” says Boughton.  The girl-centric environment has led to the impressive number of Elmwood graduates who have gone on to study math, science and engineering in university. Every year 50% of graduates go on to pursue STEM programs.  “Girls are free to be themselves, and to grow and mature in a nurturing environment where they feel supported and safe, but still challenged academically,” says Boughton.

A World-Class Curriculum

Elmwood’s curriculum exceeds the expectations of the provincial curriculum.  The school’s standards are evaluated by the International Baccalaureate Programme, the Ontario Ministry of Education and Canadian Accredited Independent Schools (CAIS).  “At Elmwood, we encourage and challenge our students to strive for academic excellence and inspire them to develop a life-long love of learning. We know that this strong foundation of knowledge and skills is crucial for success in the 21st century,” says Boughton.

Learning Opportunities Inside and Out of the Classroom

There are many ways to get involved in student life at Elmwood.  Clubs, sport teams, student government and the House system offer numerous opportunities for girls to explore their individual passions.  Elmwood focuses on developing the whole girl.  Senior students have the opportunity to participate in the Duke of Edinburgh Programme – a globally recognized personal development program which complements academics with outdoor activities, community service and learning new skills.
